Windows 10: Taskbar issues Windows 10

I recently upgrade an Alienware laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. For a short period everything appeared to work normally. I have every upgrade of Windows 10 but the task bar although visible is extremely limited.


Left clicking the start button does not bring up the menu. The search box is not functional. Program icon do start the programs but left clicking all icons on the right end of the taskbardoes not work wifi, volume, notifications etc.. I can right click all the icon on the right end of the taskbar and get that menu, but left clicking does not work. Accessing Windows Defender in the little menu box ^ displays the Windows Security window for a second and then shuts down.


I can access the main Windows Security window through 'Settings', but all of the options below 'Protected areas' in the Windows Security window are not accessible Virus & threat protection, Account protection etc.. They open for a moment and then shut down.


I have watched dozens of You Tube videos, and searched google in vane for a solution. I've done everything commonly suggested without any luck.


Can anyone offer a possible solution?

Taskbar Issue with Multiple Monitors

• Are you using a Local Account or a Microsoft Account?
• What is the make and model of your PC?

I suggest you to follow the steps provided below and check if it helps.

• Right click on the Taskbar and select Properties.
• Check if the option for Lock the Taskbar and Auto-hide the taskbar
  are ticked.
• If they are ticked then uncheck the option for Auto-hide the taskbar.

Also, suggest you to update the Display driver by following the steps below:

• Press Windows key + X, select Device Manager.
• Expand Display Adapters.
• Right click on the driver and select Update Driver Software.
• Follow the on-screen prompts to update.

Windows 10 Taskbar is not working and "fixes" don't fix it.

Provide us the additional information to understand the issue and assist you better:

• What exactly happens when you press Alt+Tab keys from the keyboard to switch between the apps?
• Have you made any changes to the operating system prior to this issue?
• What are the troubleshooting steps you have tried to resolve the issue?

As you said Taskbar is not working, and you will minimize all the opened apps to access the one you wish to from Taskbar. Be clear with how exactly you are trying to accessing the apps from Taskbar.

Step 1: I suggest you to check if you have enabled the Auto-hide option for Taskbar, if so try to disable and check if it helps.

Steps to enable auto-hide Taskbar:

• Right click in the empty space on the Taskbar, click on
  Properties,
• Under Taskbar tab, uncheck the Auto-hide the Taskbar option, click on
  Apply and Ok.

Step 2: I suggest you to install all the pending updates on your device.

• Connect to the internet.
• Press Windows key and type
  updates.
• Click on Check for updates.
• Under Windows Updates, click on
  Check for updates.
• Try to install the updates being shown.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
