Windows 10: Taskbar shows opened program icons as Blank Spaces

Hi,

After the last windows update called "Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2" I have this issue.

When I open some programs/Apps, task bar is not showing the related icon. Instead, a blank space appear in the task bar. This happened after the windows updates and I re installed the updates. However, error is still there.

As you can see in the image, it shows as blank for System related programs too. During the screen shot there were few windows apps were opened like, Windows settings, Calculater, Get Help from MS and office 365. All of them shows as blanks, whole Outlook, Chrome and MS Edge is visible.



Please help me on this.

These icons correspond to Windows Explorer, IE and Office 365 programs.

Steps i took to resolve issue, but did not help are:

1. In order to fix generic blank icon issue on taskbar i killed explorer.exe and restarted it but this did not resolve issue.
2. Ran quick repair on Office 365 & restarted Windows.

It may be possible that the blank space on your notification area is connected with the OneDrive app. We can reset the app by following the steps below:

• To open the Run dialog box, press and hold the Windows key and press
  R.
• Type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset and press
  Enter.
• The OneDrive icon will disappear and reappear for a few minutes.
• If the OneDrive icon doesn't appear on the notification area, open the
  Run dialog box again and type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe and press
  Enter.

Hi,

There is a way for us to check the notifications enabled on your device. This will help us determine if there is a program causing the issue. To do this, please follow these steps:

• Click Start, type taskbar settings and press
  Enter.
• Under Notification area, click Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
• Turn off all the notifications and try to turn it on again one by one so we can check which program has the empty icon.
