Windows 10: Taskbar/Start button not working!

I have tried this solution and the startbutton is working again. But with some things (like opening a video or a phote) I receive the message that RPC can't be executed.
How can I solve this?

 

I had this annoying problem too. The Network Settings, Power & speaker icons would only work when I ran the Add-AppxPackage. The problem was it only worked for that session and not when I shut down and re-booted. Fortunately, an update to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586 has fixed this.

 

I had this problem over the weekend. I tried just about every action listed in this thread, and nothing worked. As a last resort, I created a new id and copied everything over to it. Ugly, but it worked.

BTW, I read in one of these posts that someone couldn't create the new id because Windows was complaining about the new id not being able to logon to a Microsoft account. If you scroll down on the create id screen, you should see a "create a non-Microsoft id", or something like that. That's what I used, and it worked fine.

The long lists of posts to this "Start button not working thread" shows that this is common problem. Come on Microsoft, create a fix!

 

Running it as administrator solved that problem for me.

 

I am another one in the club.

Start button and apps stopped working both on my laptop and desktop on the same day! No methods help.

On desktop Start button keeps working for Admin account and in Safe mode for all other accounts.
On laptop it works no way and nowhere.

Amazing, but on laptop even Windows reinstall via PC refresh didn't make things work.
Last thing I wanna do is complete reinstall and then kill a couple of days for tuning system once again. Damn!

 

I don't know if it would help, but I downloaded the classic shell and have customised my start button and menus as they were on windows 7.

I have made a clean reinstall of Windows 10 with formatting of all disks. And what?
Apps stopped working after 2 minutes of first log-on. I didn't ever managed to install a single driver or third party application!
After reboot Start button stopped working too. It also never works on newly added accounts.

Alentiev: Have you clicked Reboot or just switched your pc off/on ? It´s not the same. Reboot always (temporarily) fixed that issue for me.

 

I just noticed that this thread started in August. It's now January! Microsoft has been touting how great Windows 10 is, but they won't release a fix for this? How hard could it be to fix the Start Button? What could they possibly be doing that's more important than supporting their new, "it just works", O/S? They've probably already given up on 10, like they did 8, and started developing Windows 11.

 

I continue to have issues with the Start button failing also. I have to reboot the computer, signing out and signing back in doesn't do it.

I can't access my programs and HAVE to put a shortcut on the desktop. Microsoft FIX THIS!!! UGH!!!

 

Unfortunately, it's not "only Start button", problem is that the whole "modern apps runtime" for some reason sometimes fails to start properly. It looks like MS coders themselves just don't know how to fix it.. Sad but true...

 

I think, I finally found origins of the trouble.
It's all about "Settings/System/Storage/Save locations" settings. When you change "New apps will save to" value from default disk to disk D:, (for example - like in my case) -- the whole bad thing happen. A folder "WindowsApps" appears in the root directory of disk D: and after this Apps, Search and Start button stop to work.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to fix this.

• changing "Settings/System/Storage/Save locations: New apps will save to" back to default value - doesn't help
• Manual deletion of WindowsApps folder on D: -- doesn't help
• Even rolling back to a previously created restore point -- doesn't help
• Re-installing/Re-registering apps -- doesn't help

There is some serious bug out there. The only method is NEVER CHANGE "Settings/System/Storage/Save locations" !!!

Does anyone know how to prevent the possibility of changing this setting globally? Maybe via registry editing?

 

Is that the bug for the start button!? Omg!!!!

 

I truly think - it's just ONE of the reasons. There must be a lot more. The whole system with modern apps is all buggy.

 

I think that the only way how MS can fix this issue is to gradually rewrite whole modern apps runtime. Seems that's what they're trying..
