To me it sounds like some malware or a virus that was added by whoever put that up. I would not use it at all. There are legitimate sources out there that have a clean ISO for download.

  3. That was my initial thought yesterday, downloading from non ms sources sounds dodgy to me (although there probably are genuine ones)

I usually have good experience with the bay, but the particular author of this torrent is not a known figure. I took it because it downloaded faster than the known figure's torrent, which everyone else was using.
okay, experience is a good teacher.
I rolled back to build 10166 for the meantime.

I tried again with a different, more reliable ISO, and I came up with the same "trojan"', this time caught by WD before bitdefender free could even kick in.
I suspect it is just a false positive.

I don't know about that. Defender isn't known for it's false positives, in fact, it has the lowest of all AV's:

    taskmngr.exe??

that is generally correct. but in this particular case, virus total gave the file a relatively low rating -- 29 / 55.

That's not a low rating*Shock, That says over half or the 55 different anti virus software have flagged it as malware!

I have to agree.. that's a serious issue there. I got my ISO from Microsoft News and it's been smooth sailing with that and every ISO I've gotten from them.

I really think that the ISO was/is corrupted with some malware and it should not be used.

You need to sit this one out, and reinstall or reimage your original OS to you disk. Even if you got a clean ISO, from what I understand, you couldn't activate it. Microsoft is only activating the ones installed through Windows Update now.

The user might be able to keep or get build 10240 activated if they use the ISO to upgrade over a currently activated build/version. Say you have WIn8.1 activated you can upgrade to 10240 and it will be activated. But now you can't install any build of WIn10 and activate it.. that's been turned off by MS.

So the only option now is to go from an activated version.. Win7/Win8.1

    taskmngr.exe??

Oh? Ok thanks for the info*Smile I did think it odd. So it's just clean installs of the current build that will not activate?

Basically any clean installs of win10 will not activate. I did get WIn8.1(activated) to upgrade to 10240 and it remained activated on Thursday morning.. and I got the update on Friday and all other updates. So it seems that doing that will work. I hope it does on the 29th as well.

I just had a long discussion directly with the author of the torrent, on a different forum. It seems that I picked up a virus from a different piece of software that I had installed before, one which I know for sure had PUPs. Although the AV didn't detect this file at the time, maybe the virus definitions got updated or something.

In any case, the author of the torrent is held in very high esteem.
