Windows 10: Tech support scam

Unfortunately, when I was at work yesterday, my wife fell for a tech support scam. There were "microsoft-looking" pop ups indicating the computer was hacked, there was a robot voice giving a warning, and there were instructions to call a number, which she did. She was on the phone with them and they had her download HopToDesk, and she gave access to the computer. She can't really describe what they did, but I noticed "tiny banker trojan" in the windows search bar searches. Perhaps thankfully, my wife doesn't know how to do much on the computer and she said the woman on the line with an Indian

:)

 

Ms tech support is it a scam?

As already mentioned: Yes that's a scam.

All these kind of pop-ups are fake warnings - scams. Never ever call these numbers.

Clear your temporary internet files and reboot. Do not restore the browser session.

After the reboot, the pop-up should be gone.

If you believe sensitive information such as bank passwords might have been compromised, go to another computer and change it immediately. Contact your bank to let them know of any suspicious activities.

Change your other passwords for services such as emails and other important web sites you visit.

Have a notepad near by so you can write down the new passwords.

Let friends and family know on social media, they should not accept any request begging for money or disclose sensitive information, since someone might be pretending to be you.
