Windows 10: The AI-powered Bing is now part of Windows 11

Microsoft announced the official release of the second big update for Windows 11 a moment ago. The update, called Moment 2, is the second feature drop for Windows 11 version 22H2. Microsoft released this particular version of Windows 11 in late 2022. The first feature drop, which introduced File Explorer tabs and other features, was released just a month after the update's release.

We revealed information about the second feature drop update for Windows 11 last week already. Not all features included in the update were known last week.

AI-powered Bing in Windows 11

Probably the biggest surprise is the integration of AI-powered Bing directly on Windows 11. Microsoft introduced Bing search capabilities in Windows 10 and has improved the integration in Windows 11.

Users of the operating system may get web search results when they run searches. Now, Microsoft is extending the capabilities of Bing Search on Windows 11 again. This time, it is the new Bing that is integrated into the operating system.

Microsoft launched a preview of Bing Chat, a new AI powered option, several weeks ago as a preview. Users may chat with the AI to get recommendations or information. Microsoft had to tweak the preview several times since its launch, but seems right on course to launch it in a usable state to the public later on.

The integration into other Microsoft products, including Windows 11, is the next logical step for the company. Microsoft users who are already invited to try Bing Chat may also use the AI when they run searches on the Windows 11 desktop. Everyone else needs to wait until they do get invited by Microsoft before the option becomes available.

Windows 11 users who activate the search box of Windows 11 after the installation of the feature drop see a short intro for the new Bing. There, Microsoft highlights that the new Bing is available. It includes learn more and try links, and two example queries for users to try out.

Microsoft notes that the search box is "one of the most widely used features on Windows, with over half a billion users every month".

The company promises that all Windows 11 users will be able to get access to the Ai-powered Bing "soon", so that they use it to "search, chat, answer questions and generate content [..] right on their Windows taskbar".

Windows 11 users may sign-up on the official waitlist using a Microsoft account to receive an invite eventually.

The second feature drop for Windows 11 was launched on February 28, 2023. It is available via Windows Update and the new apps are available via Microsoft Store updates.

Windows administrators may select Start > Settings > Windows Update to check for the update manually. It should be picked up by this manual search process and installed on the device. Microsoft expects to roll out the update to all non-managed devices via Windows Update during the March 2023 monthly security update release. The update will be released on March 14, 2023.

Introducing the next wave of AI at Scale innovations in Bing

Bing users around the globe perform hundreds of millions of search queries every day. These queries are diverse in many ways, from the intent the users are seeking to fulfill, to the languages and regions where these queries are issued. To handle such a dynamic range of usage, AI models in Bing must continuously evolve and therefore Bing is the prime example of Microsoft AI at Scale.

This blog post introduces recent updates to Bing that are making use of the Microsoft Turing Natural Language Generation (T-NLG) model, as well as expanding the use of the Microsoft Turing Natural Language Representation (T-NLR) model in production. Bringing Natural Language Generation into Bing

In May, we outlined the use of AI models fine-tuned from the Turing Natural Language Representation model in different parts of Bing’s question answering and ranking systems. In the last year, there has been very exciting progress on Natural Language Generation, including training our very own T-NLG model, and the introduction of OpenAI’s GPT-3, trained with Microsoft Azure. Today we are excited to share how these advancements are enabling us to build better search experiences.Improving Autosuggest using Turing-NLG Next Phrase Prediction

Autosuggest (AS) improves the search experience by suggesting the most relevant completed queries matching the partial query entered by the user. The key objective of AS is to save users time and keystrokes by offering better and faster query completion. The most frequent search prefixes are usually handled by suggestions that leverage previous queries issued by Bing users. However, as the user types more specific search terms (longer queries), the ability to generate suggestions on the fly becomes essential to overcome limitations of approaches based on previous queries.

Next Phrase Prediction is an AS feature that provides full phrase suggestions in real time for long queries. Before the introduction of Next Phrase Prediction, the approach for handling query suggestions for longer queries was limited to completing the current word being typed by the user. With Next Phrase Prediction, full phrase suggestions can be presented. Furthermore, because these suggestions are generated in real time, they are not limited to previously seen data or just the current word being typed. As a result, the coverage of AS completions increases considerably, improving the overall user experience significantly. The generative models are particularly challenging from an inferencing perspective due to – size of models and number of inferences required per query (one has to ideally run model inference per keystroke as the user is typing the query). We have introduced several innovations with respect to model compression, state caching, and hardware acceleration of these models to help delight our users cost efficiently.

Microsoft reinventing search with AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge

To empower people to unlock the joy of discovery, feel the wonder of creation and better harness the world’s knowledge, today we’re improving how the world benefits from the web by reinventing the tools billions of people use every day, the search engine and the browser.

Today, we’re launching an all new, AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, available in preview now at Bing.com, to deliver better search, more complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content. We think of these tools as an AI copilot for the web.

“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web.”

There are 10 billion search queries a day, but we estimate half of them go unanswered. That’s because people are using search to do things it wasn’t originally designed to do. It’s great for finding a website, but for more complex questions or tasks too often it falls short.

The new Bing and Edge – Your copilot for the web

We have brought together search, browsing and chat into one unified experience you can invoke from anywhere on the web, delivering:

Better search. The new Bing gives you an improved version of the familiar search experience, providing more relevant results for simple things like sports scores, stock prices and weather, along with a new sidebar that shows more comprehensive answers if you want them.

Complete answers. Bing reviews results from across the web to find and summarize the answer you’re looking for. For example, you can get detailed instructions for how to substitute eggs for another ingredient in a cake you are baking right in that moment, without scrolling through multiple results.

A new chat experience. For more complex searches – such as for planning a detailed trip itinerary or researching what TV to buy – the new Bing offers new, interactive chat. The chat experience empowers you to refine your search until you get the complete answer you are looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas – with links available so you can immediately act on your decisions.

A creative spark. There are times when you need more than an answer – you need inspiration. The new Bing can generate the content to help you. It can help you write an email, create a 5-day itinerary for a dream vacation to Hawaii, with links to book your travel and accommodations, prep for a job interview or create a quiz for trivia night. The new Bing also cites all its sources, so you’re able to see links to the web content it references.

New Microsoft Edge experience. We’ve updated the Edge browser with new AI capabilities and a new look, and we’ve added two new functionalities: Chat and compose. With the Edge Sidebar, you can ask for a summary of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways – and then use the chat function to ask for a comparison to a competing company’s financials and automatically put it in a table. You can also ask Edge to help you compose content, such as a LinkedIn post, by giving it a few prompts to get you started. After that, you can ask it to help you update the tone, format and length of the post. Edge can understand the web page you’re on and adapts accordingly.

With the new Bing, exploring the web isn’t just easier, it’s also more fun. Ask it things like:

Reinventing search with AI

The new Bing experience is a culmination of four technical breakthroughs:

Next-generation OpenAI model. We’re excited to announce the new Bing is running on a new, next-generation OpenAI large language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search. It takes key learnings and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 – and it is even faster, more accurate and more capable.

Microsoft Prometheus model. We have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows us to best leverage its power. We call this collection of capabilities and techniques the Prometheus model. This combination gives you more relevant, timely and targeted results, with improved safety.

Applying AI to core search algorithm. We’ve also applied the AI model to our core Bing search ranking engine, which led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades. With this AI model, even basic search queries are more accurate and more relevant.

New user experience. We’re reimagining how you interact with search, browser and chat by pulling them into a unified experience. This will unlock a completely new way to interact with the web.

These groundbreaking new search experiences are possible because Microsoft has committed to building Azure into an AI supercomputer for the world, and OpenAI has used this infrastructure to train the breakthrough models that are now being optimized for Bing.

Together with OpenAI, we’ve also been intentional in implementing safeguards to defend against harmful content. Our teams are working to address issues such as misinformation and disinformation, content blocking, data safety and preventing the promotion of harmful or discriminatory content in line with our AI principles.

The new Bing is available today in a limited preview on desktop, and everyone can visit Bing.com today to try sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. We’re going to scale the preview to millions in the coming weeks. A mobile experience will also be in preview soon.

Building the New Bing

A year and a half ago, I wrote an article suggesting that search was far from a solved problem, and that in fact it was poised for a revolution. I suggested that by applying deep learning models and making search more modern and intuitive, we could significantly improve the experience for our users.

I’m thrilled to see that we are making a large step forward towards this vision with the recent announcement of the new Bing. We’ve received many questions in the last couple of weeks of the current preview, so I’d like to share a little bit more about the new Bing and how it came to be.

Behind the scenes: How the new Bing came to be

Last Summer, OpenAI shared their next generation GPT model with us, and it was game-changing. The new model was much more powerful than GPT-3.5, which powers ChatGPT, and a lot more capable to synthesize, summarize, chat and create. Seeing this new model inspired us to explore how to integrate the GPT capabilities into the Bing search product, so that we could provide more accurate and complete search results for any query including long, complex, natural queries.
