Only after at least support for older windows has ended (and that's going to be long time) could a name like only Windows be used. Considering that even XP is still installed in so many computers, it's going to be loooong time till only Windows can be used.

I know that support for other windows will end but people are still using the older windows versions.

MS has said Win 10 is the last Windows, but has said nothing about it being the last MS OS.

  6. They have a Windows for IoT, if you can really call it Windows. Pretty limited functionality. Runs on the ARM processor though.

  7. There's also a Win 10 Launcher for Android, although it's not produced by MS.

interesting.... when i downloaded 8.1 a few months ago
it was called Windows.iso and that's all...

i tried to install xp on this 8.1 notebook
but the install button was greyed out...

isn't it true that the new firmware on the new computers
will only accept 8.1 or newer because of the bios?

  9. No, on most you can turn off secure boot in the BIOS and install an older OS in legacy mode.

    what i meant was...

    i imagine there's a lot of people who don't
and they'll probably try and just give up
and put 10 on it like i did...

which goes along with the story...

Yes, that will happen. The average Joe will likely not know what to do. Or why it happened. Then blame Microsoft. The info is out there if you know where to look.
