The Esc key on my keyboard is malfunctioning.

The Esc key on my computer suddenly stopped working properly. Initially, I thought the key itself was broken, but later I realized the issue only occurs in specific applications. Strangely, it was working fine the day before. For example:When I maximized File Explorer, pressing the Esc key didn't restore it to a smaller windowThe same issue occurs in Edge browser and other applications

  2. Esc key issue

    Hi

My name is Lester and hopefully, this will help answer your question, I actually experience the same issue as before, and this is definitely a hardware issue, but to make sure to you have external mouse and keyboard (USB mouse and keyboard) what I highly suggest
to check is to permanently disable the Touchpad and Keyboard of your PC and use the external by this we can check if there is a malfunction on the keyboard itself, moreover make sure that external is also working on boot up,

Once you have mouse and keyboard plugin

Try to disable the built-in keyboard:

Step 1. On Device manager> click on keyboard and look for your keyboard driver.

Step 2. Right click on the Keyboard Driver and select Update Driver Software> Browse my computer for driver software> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer> Uncheck show compatible hardware.

Step 3. select for any driver that is not compatible with your Keyboard then click next and restart the PC.

By that it should not work as it is not compatible driver.

Note: Make sure that external keyboard is working before doing this process.

Let me know how does it goes, and we have sets of troubleshooting steps here.

  3. Where is the esc key on the onscreen keyboard? [SOLVED]

Doesn't one just love how useless these communities are? Microsoft, Google and then some could learn a great deal from companies like OnePlus that actually listen to their community. Anyway, here it goes. Again.

The default onscreen keyboard in Windows 10 on tablets has no Esc, numpad (Del, End, etc.) or function (F1, F2, ...) keys. Also notice how one can't combine the Ctrl and shift keys.

This question was already raised in 2012 (link 1 below). This is actually funny.. A "Volunteer Moderator" suggested to use the F11 key instead. Eventually a sensible user provided the OSK workaround. Mind that Win 10 was released in 2015. In
that year it was raised again (link 2 below) and it was condescendingly "misunderstood" and eventually locked without any answer.

    Link 2: Redirecting

When searching for "keyboard" in "Windows Settings", it reads "Search results aren't quite ready yet, but we're working on getting them together. Try back in a few minutes.". Can someone explain to me why Android is miles ahead in intuitivity and functionality?

But guess what; there's a solution!

    • Open Windows Settings
    • Tap Devices
    • Tap Typing
    • Scroll down to Touch keyboard
    • Enable Add the standard keyboard layout as a touch keyboard option
    • Pull up the keyboard
    • Tap the input key bottom right
    • Tap the far right keyboard option (yes, the one that was disabled by default)
    You're welcome =)

  4. The Esc key on my keyboard is malfunctioning.

    Specific Keyboard Keys Malfunctioning

My keyboard keys have recently been malfunctioning. Sometimes, the keys do not register at all, and sometimes, it as to be pressed and held with force to register. Only a few select keys are effected, namely the: right arrow key, \, e, g, h, and 8 and 9 on the numerical keypad.

The keyboard was the factory keyboard included with my Asus X751LD laptop.

This started after I used a Java application. It is very unlikely to be a hardware issue, as the laptop was never moved or subjected to drops. Another possible factor is I have used Autosofted Keyboard Presser.

The keys function, although with lag, after startup, but stop working within a few seconds.

I have tried the following to no avail:

    • Restarting
    • Restarting in Safe Mode
    • Updating keyboard drivers in Device Manager
    • Updating Java

    These sites did not help:

Does anyone know how to fix this?

(Was a pain typing this, makes me understand just how much I use the e key)

    Edit:

I tested the keyboard with a Linux live CD. First time I booted, the keys will not registrar in a notepad app unless I repetitively press them around 20 times. I rebooted into Linux again, this time the keyboard worked OK, but missed keystrokes occasionally. In both situations it was the same keys as described above that were malfunctioning.

After rebooting into Windows, the keyboard functioned like the 2nd situation above (occasional missed strokes) for around 5min. Then no amount of pressing on the malfunctioning keys could make it register.
