Windows 10: The free Windows 10 upgrade means users won't be buying New PCs

Discus and support The free Windows 10 upgrade means users won't be buying New PCs in Windows 10 News to solve the problem; I thought it only takes 30 to 60 minutes to upgrade to windows 10, not several hours. There was an issue with a previous build that didn't install... Discussion in 'Windows 10 News' started by Wynona, May 28, 2015.

You're right for the most part, Groze. But every once-in-awhile, someone gets caught with a "several hour" update. I think the only time I got caught like that was with Build 10049.

  2. Yeah, a few of my parents non-techy friends will buy new computers "just to have the newest version". With windows 10 being so light weight and free, I'm sure they won't be buying new PCs anytime soon. Unless the computer totally dies, that's another story.

  3. True. But the other consideration is if I am buying a new PC with a new OS on the horizon I may want to wait and see if it has issues. If I could I waited to buy a new desktop tower until it came with SP1 already loaded. I should have done that with Vista.

Seems like when I ignore my own advice I get burned. *Smile

I likely won't buy a PC with the OS preinstalled until I have to replace my laptop. Hopefully not for a long time to come. Desktop wise I build my own. I'm getting the itch to start a new build actually. What OS I will run on it when the time come I'm not sure. It will be 8.1 or 10. Being a Microsoft MVP makes life easier for me than some of you. A perk of being an MVP is a free MSDN subscription. I'll get keys for Windows 10 when its released and access to ISO files. I'll test out the free upgrade process so I can give advice on it anyway, but I can easily go back to 8.1 if I want. It's no big deal to me if the upgrade goes south. I can recover quit easily. I have options the normal consumer doesn't. I've given up my factory OEM installs long ago. I do it my way. Don't get me wrong, I can sympathies with those of you not so fortunate. It could end up being a tough decision for some. All I can say is I'll try and help in any way I can if you get in a bind.

I had a paid Technet subscription for several years, but when that was dissolved, I lost all my testing materials, per se. The last thing I got was Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1, which I still use for testing Microsoft stuff.

I'm hoping we'll get a deal on Windows 10 upgrade; I'd like to have a couple for my Windows 7 licenses.

  6. I'm still running on my TechNet keys for the most part. I've only used one or two of my MSDN keys. TechNet gave me 3 keys each for Windows and Office and I have 4 PC's. Yeah, the TechNet site is still active but you can't download anything or get any new keys. All you can do is look over any keys you already have. I hope Microsoft offers up some good deals for those that need them. People with Vista or XP for instance. I'll get more keys than I'll ever need for 10 on MSDN. I may not need any depending on how many of my PC's I do the free upgrade on. I want to see how that works out first hand so I'll be doing at least one for sure.

I could definitely see how the release of Windows 10 will increase PC sales as all the non-techies will be buying new equipment in order to run the latest and greatest OS. This will be a windfall for the hardware manufacturers.

Did you read any of the posts in this thread? The general consensus is just the opposite to what your thinking will happen. Why would non-techies buy a new PC when most can likely upgrade to 10 for free? It's been my experience that the non-techies just run what they brung until it dies.

Well lets ask some that like windows 10, I am sure there are a few non-techies on Windows 10 forums.

Non techies will you upgrade to windows 10 for free or keep their current operating system on your hard drive?
Non techies will you buy a new system with windows 10 instead and keep using the current operating system on your old computer?
Non techies will you buy a windows 10 install disk?

I didn't read every post in this thread ,but I have read so many time that the way win10 will work is similar to how Apple OS works now ,so if that's true people who want to stay up to date will have to buy a new computer when win10 no longer supports there hardware ... my older MacBook with a intel duel core 2.2 cpu cant be update to os 7.0,,, it stops at os 6.8,,,so I need a new one if I want to keep up with the Jones's ..so users will at some point have to upgrade there hardware,,,Microsoft is not looking to put the Computer makers out of business

as a backyard computer repair person I deal with a lot of non-techies ,and a lot, maybe even most, don't even know what OS is on there computer when I ask them ,and have no clue that win10 is in the state it in right now and millions of people are even using it on a daily bases

Had to smile when I saw this post. My reply comes to you on the following machine:

I bought two of these HP desktops that originally came with Vista just before Win7 was released. Both were upgraded to Win7. My wife's machine is still running that same Home Premium version and essentially is on 24/7. My machine has been upgraded from Vista to 7 to 8.0 to 8.1.1 and also is essentially on 24/7. I am dual booting presently and both machines are networked with 3 printers.
So Wynona, drag that Vista desktop out!

Come to think on it, Alpha, most likely the "non-techies" will be offered the "upgrade to Windows 10" the same way they were offered Windows 8.1 and 8.1.1 . . . if so, it will be kind of a no brainer for them to just click on "OK, gimme it!" *Smile
