Windows 10: The most straight-forward way to share a folder to another computer with Wifi

I have googled and read a lot of articles on this supposedly straight-forward task, yet didn't find a straight-forward answer. So I want to ask here and try to word the question in a straight-forward way:


What I have:

Two PCs, a desktop and a laptop, both running up-to-date Windows 10 (as of now, early 2019)

Both logged in with the one and only administrator account, which is my Windows Account (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***)


What I want to achieve:

Share a folder from the desktop to the laptop by right clicking a folder and choose "Give access to...", then visit \\MY-DESKTOP from the laptop in the same WiFi


My issue:

When I visit \\MY-DESKTOP from the laptop, I do see the folders I just shared, but when I double click, it says I don't have permission.


My question:

When I right click and choose "Give access to...", who should I give the access to?

- Homegroup? I thought it's deprecated.

- Create a new user? I don't need new user accounts except myself which is the administrator.

- Myself? Which is the owner, which is *** Email address is removed for privacy ***, which is also logged on the laptop, but it didn't automatically work, as said above.

When you share files or folders, they are not as protected as they are when you do not share them. People with access to your computer or your network might be able to read, copy, or change files that are in a shared folder. You should always be aware that the files and folders that you share are available to other people and be sure to monitor your shared files and folders on a regular basis.

If your computer is not joined to a domain, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to automatically turn file and printer sharing on or off. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Setup Wizard.
If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.

Sharing a folder

I appreciate your time and patience to work on this issue.

To know the username of your computer, please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Type Command prompt in the search bar.
   
2. Right click on the Command prompt icon and select Run as Administrator.
   
3. Type whoami in Command Prompt window and press Enter.
   
4. You will find the username of the computer, use the username and your password to access the file from the shared folder.
   

However, if the above steps didn’t help, I suggest you to turn off password protected sharing and check if that helps.

To turn off password protected sharing, please follow the steps mentioned below on your laptop:

1. Press and hold Windows + R key on the keyboard.
   
2. Type Control and click on
   OK.
   
3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
   
4. Click on Change advance sharing settings.
   
5. Under All Networks, click on
   Turn off password protected sharing.

Folder sharing across 2 computers

Thank you for the details that you've provided. We suggest that re-map the network folder to refresh the connection between the two computers. Kindly follow the steps below:

• Right click on the Windows icon and select Control Panel.
• Click Network and Internet on the left menu.
• Click Network and Sharing Center at the right menu.
• Click Change advanced sharing settings on the left menu.
• Under All Networks, turn on the Public folder sharing. (Refer to the screenshot below.)
