    Now, you may own the operating system, but it doesn’t give you the right to delete my Wi-Fi network drivers from HP… that’s my hardware, and their software. Microsoft are beginning to creep me out with their involvement in my life and my property.All the help on here says to update the drivers…can’t update them if we can’t download them since you deleted our Wi-Fi adapter drivers… I’m on my phone doing this, so don’t try to be smart about how I’m connected to write this.Maybe if Windows want to do this during an update, it would be wise and smart to actually warn us before we update, and then

    :)

  2. New Network Card, No WiFi

    A two-hour call with Dell convinced them that my network card was failing, so the next day a tech installed a new card. No matter what I have done, no matter what a support agent did during a four-hour phone call, this new card will not find my local WiFi network, it will not even find a network I set up in the DSL modem.

    I finally convinced Dell to provide, on a one-time basis, a second card, but today, they cancelled the order on the blatantly incorrect basis that our ISP was at fault. I had the ISP check, no problems found. My wife's computer is connected to WiFi, as is the printer; as part of my testing, I disconnected the router from the DSL modem, and could still print from her computer. (Why a DSL modem with WiFi and a router? I had the router set up when the previous DSL modem failed, so set up the new modem and connected it to the router, rather than entering all the MAC addresses, etc., in the new modem.)

    I have read numerous ways of fixing the problem. While I am not sure of everything that the agent on the four-hour call did, I believe that she did some of the tricks of refreshing various Windows components, etc. I have run out of things to try, have more or less exhausted the on-line suggestions, etc., and have sent a detailed email to Dell outlining why it appears to me that the only thing that does not work is the new card's ability to find and use WiFi.

    Next, other than applying my ten-pound sledge hammer? I even started Windows in Safe Mode with Networking, only to find that the WiFi card cannot be loaded there-and on, and on, and I'm tired, frustrated, and any assistance offered would, of course, be appreciated.

    New Wifi default to metered

    Chris,

    Yes, it is a Registry entry. See the procedure in my post #74 in another TenForums thread. {in case it is of interest, my post #73 in that thread lists the steps I take to avoid all automatic Windows updates}

    By making that change, every new WiFi network will, by default, be set as metered. You will still be able to change that back to non-metered for a specific WiFi network in the normal manner.

    Wifi and browser problems with windows 10

    I'll tell you how I fixed an identical problem on a ASUS laptop that had run perfectly on Windows 7 and ran well on W10 from January until the Anniversary update in early August. I tried everything I found on this forum and two others. Nothing worked. The last thing someone suggested was disabling the adapter and using a WiFi dongle. Problem continued. Nobody suggested changing the wireless network adapter. I bought and installed an Intel 7260 WiFi card and just used the driver which was downloaded on the reboot after the install. All problems solved!!

    I must have wasted two months reading and trying everything. Even the manufacturer support inferred I needed a new machine though they sent me a Windows 8.1 driver to try, with the same result.

    I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to determine if they white list any cards and see if they have suggestions for a compatible card. They may want you to buy another laptop but if the cards aren't white listed, a simple card swap to one compatible with Windows 10 seems to be the answer.
