  1. The security of an additional drive or partition

Hi,I once read a theory that the downside of having additional drives partitions is that Windows best protects the drive partition on which it is installed. Does this make any sense, and does having more drives partitions actually impact security in any way? Are files or programs installed on an additional drive partition less secure, or does the system become more vulnerable to attacks in such a case?

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

    Partition or multiple hard drives?

As the title suggests. Is it worth installing say a 36GB drive for the OS soley or partitioning an existing larger drive with either 2 or more partitions? I am currently running Vista 32bit and want to try out 64bit and am sick of reformatting the whole drive. Any suggestions?

    Additional drive partition created automatically

Hi Siddh. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Please post a screenshot of Disk Management, which I read like a doctor reads X-rays. Follow the steps here so I can see everything needed to advise you:

That sounds like an additional Recovery partition that was created during a Version Update. This has it's contents hidden but contains the Recovery tools that repair Windows when it cannot start, were previously on C.

There is an issue where Version 1803 adds a drive letter to the Recovery partition that should be hidden because it's only used for bootable repair tools that in previous edition of Windows were on C drive. Then it reports that it is full.

Since the partition is to meant to be hidden it can't have drive letter removed in Disk Mgmt like other partitions. So you can wait for Windows Update to deliver a fix for this as promised, or take these steps now to remove it:

    1. Select the Start button, type cmd and then right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.

    2. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type diskpart and press Enter.

    3. Type list volume and press Enter.

    4. Make note of the volume number for the drive letter you want to remove. For example, if the drive letter you want to remove is Drive “D”, note the volume number for Drive D.

    5. Type the following command, and press Enter.

    select volume <volume number>

When typing this command, in place of <volume number>, substitute the volume number you made note of in Step 4. In the example above, if the volume number for drive G is 5, you would type: select volume 5

    6. Type the following command and press Enter.

    remove letter=<drive letter>

When typing this command, in place of <drive letter>, substitute the drive letter you want to remove. In this example, you would type: remove letter=G

    7. Close the Command Prompt window.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
