Windows 10: The top two USB ports are not working properly

Hello, I have a custom-built computer, that I first saw issues with when I plugged in my wife's apple phone. at first, I paid no mind to it, saying that apple and windows are not the best of buds. however, I've found out that normal pcs that you get from the store have zero issues when it comes to having an apple phone plugged into it. I then began to get nervous when the two normal USB 2.0 ports on top of my tower began to not even recognize a normal flash drive, and I had to use the USB 3.0 to get work done. I've thought it was power issues, but nothing much else is being plugged into m

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Since all the USB ports are working and the problem is with the USB 3.0 port in the right side of the laptop, then this issue is with that particular port.

You can contact the manufacture of the laptop to get it done.

As a workaround, I suggest you to Run Hardware troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Follow these steps to run hardware troubleshooter.

• Type troubleshooting
  in search box.
• Select view all on the top left pane.
• Click on Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter and follow the prompts to
  run the troubleshooter.

Your concern about the USB port can be due to broken software components and/or hardware issues on your device. To better understand your concern, we'd like to know the following:

• If your USB devices works on other ports on your device.
• The version and build of Windows 10 that you're using on your device. To check this, you can perform the steps posted on this
  
  link.

In the meantime, we'd recommend running the Windows troubleshooter to find and fix problems with devices and hardware. To do this, you can perform the following:

• Search and launch Control Panel using Cortana.
• In the Search Control Panel box, type troubleshooting.
• Click on Troubleshooting.
• Click on Hardware and Sound.
• Click on Hardware and Devices.

If the above steps won't suffice, we'd recommend performing the following to uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers. To do this, you can perform the following:

• Search and launch Device Manager using Cortana.
• Locate and collapse the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
• Right-click on a listed driver and then select Properties.
• Under the Driver tab, click on Uninstall Device.
• Repeat steps 3 and 4 to each of the drivers listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
• Restart your device.

Note: Restarting the device will reinstall the USB drivers.

USB Port Oddities


Ok, let's see it with pictures step-by-step. First right-click on the USB device and select Update driver software:





Then select Browse my computer for driver software (LAST option) :





The select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer (LAST option) :





Then select the standard driver from the list and click next:





Click next/OK as required to complete installation. Repeat the steps for all Intel USB devices. Finally click on each USB root device and press DEL to delete it, reply YES when asked. After deleting all USB root devices restart the computer.
