Windows 10: The touchpad does not work for Windows, but does work for Ubuntu and BIOS

I was installing drivers through IOBit's Driver Booster on a new Lenovo Ideapad S540, when suddenly the mouse pointer disappeared and the touchpad stopped responding. In the Device Manager, the driver corresponding to the touchpad returned an error with code 45 - meaning the touchpad was disconnected. But later I found that it was working well in the Advanced Startup menu accessed through the NOVO button, but not in the same menu accessed through Windows Settings. In Windows, the mouse pointer reappeared only on connecting an external mouse.


Also, the touchpad worked well for Ubuntu OS which I later installed alongside Windows. This means it's not a hardware problem. So, I updated Windows to the latest and the BIOS to the latest - but for no avail. So, where does the root cause of this problem lie?

Touchpad not working

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it fixes the issue.

Method 1: Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

Follow these steps to run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:

• Press Windows key + W and type troubleshooting.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Select View all on the top left corner.
• Click Hardware and Devices.
• Follow the on-screen instruction to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2: Uninstall and reinstall the driver

I suggest you to try uninstall the Touchpad drivers check if it works for you.

Follow the steps to uninstall the Touchpad drivers:

• Press Windows Key + X key and click Device Manager.
• Right-click on the Touchpad device listed and click on ‘Uninstall’.
• Select the option to Delete driver software.
• Restart the computer after its uninstalled.

Try to access the device manufacturer's website and download and install the latest chipset and touchpad drivers.

We understand how difficult it could be, when the touchpad is not working. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below.

• What is the Windows 10 version and Build installed? (Type
  winver in Windows search/Run command)
  
• What is the make and model of the PC?
  
• Does touchpad has a Synaptic/Elan driver?

However, we would suggest you to reinstall the touchpad driver.

1. Press Windows +X and select
   Device Manager.
   
2. Search and expand Mice and other pointing devices.
   
3. Right click on the listed driver one by one and select
   Uninstall device.
   
4. Check the box beside Delete the driver software for this device and click
   Ok.
   
5. Follow the onscreen steps and restart the PC.
   
6. Upon restart the touchpad driver should install automatically, in case it doesn’t install, then go to the manufacturer website and install the touchpad driver for this model.

Touchpad gestures NOT working

Hi Abuzar,

Your touchpad drivers might be outdated or corrupted. I would suggest that you update the touchpad driver. Follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key and X together and select
  Device Manager.
• Locate the touchpad driver.
• Right-click on the touchpad driver icon and click Update Driver software.
• Click on Search automatically for Updated driver software option.

If the driver for Windows 10 is not available, download and reinstall the latest touchpad drivers from the manufacturer website.
