"The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout" - event 8224 on Windows 10.

I'm making a separate post here because I'm not sure if this is the cause of my crash.

My computer recently started to freeze, then restart very frequently.

To try and solve this problem, I disabled the setting where my computer would restart on crash. Now, however, it just freezes.

I looked through the reliability logs, as well as the event logs and I ultimately came across this post:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...e/40ae9d42-1892-4ae8-99cf-b306f043f280?page=1

I followed the steps recommended in solving it. Fortunately after doing the recommended scans, Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

However, a couple seconds after receiving that message and clicking around on my desktop, it froze: telling me that my issue isn't fixed just yet.

What should I do now? All my drivers are up to date, my SSD has plenty of space (50% full) if that even matters, and I am not sure what to do anymore.

    :)

  2. "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout" - event 8224 on Windows 10.

Original Title: System volume information keeps increasing

This folder keeps increasing and gobbling up my C drive. I have System Restore set on the C drive alone with a maximum of 12 Gb, but it ignores this and sets itself to 100%. I have many files {e8eec.........} in this folder and a new one appears often (15+
in the last 90 min). Each time a new file appears, it coincides with "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout" - event 8224 in Event Viewer. Any ideas how to stop it?.

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for the update and sorry for the delayed response.

Event ID 8224 is simply an information indicating
Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) is complete performing backup of the files and data on the system according to the
System Restore option set on the C: drive.

The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) provides the ability to create a point in time image (shadow copy) of one or more volumes that can be used to perform backups. The service is also used during restores of applications.

This is completely normal as the PC is informing you about the action being complete on the system. If this is happening regularly, perhaps to try and confirm if the backup is the cause or not, disable the backup option for a day
or two and check if the message will be shown on screen.

To disable the backup option, follow the steps below:

    • Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
Settings and select the top most search result.
    • Click on Update & Security from the window and select
Backup from the left side panel of the window.
    • Click on the drive added under Backup using File History and select
      Remove.
    • Check if the message is shown on the screen for a day or two.
    • Add the drive back to continue the backup feature on the system.

Write to us with the status of the issue for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.

"The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout" - event 8224 on Windows 10.

    Hello Tom,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused and will assist you in resolving the issue.

Before assisting further, did you check if Volume Shadow Copy service is enabled and running in the
    Services window on the PC?

You may be facing the above issue due to the improper setting set for
    VSS services
    from the Services page.

VSS services is otherwise called as
    Volume Shadow Copy services
which manages and implements Volume Shadow Copies used for backup and other purposes. If this service is stopped,
Shadow copies will be unavailable for backup and the backup may fail. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Follow the steps below and check if Volume Shadow Copy service is set to
Automatic and Running under Startup type and
    Status.

    • Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
Services and select the top most search result.
    • Locate Volume Shadow Copy services and check if
Status shows Running and the Startup Type is set to
      Automatic.
    • If not set, double click on the service and select from the drop down bar
Automatic under Startup type and Service status to
      Running.
    • Click on Apply and OK.
    • Check if the changes are effective after closing the window.

Write to us with the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance.
Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.
