How to download and install the August 2023 security updates

Most Home installations of Windows will get the August 2023 security updates automatically. Windows Updates is configured to download and install security updates after they are released; this does not happen in real-time though, but may take anywhere from a few minutes to days.

Home system administrators may run a manual check for updates, which will find the newly released update to install it immediately. As always, it is recommended to create a backup before installing Windows updates.

    1. Select Start, type Windows Update and load the Windows Update item that is displayed.
    2. Select check for updates to run a manual check for updates.

Microsoft Says Internet Explorer More Secure Than Firefox

Jeff Jones, Security Strategy Director at Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, following his recent report putting Windows Vista ahead of Linux and Mac OS X for security, has now placed Internet Explorer ahead of the open source Firefox browser in a long-term comparative study. According to his analysis, fewer security vulnerabilities needed fixing in Internet Explorer than in the competition. Jones explains in his report Browser Vulnerability Analysis (PDF), that Mozilla has fixed 199 security vulnerabilities since November 2004, when Firefox first appeared, of which 75 were critical, 100 medium and 24 of low importance. Over the same period, a total of 87 security vulnerabilities were fixed in Internet Explorer, of which 54 were critical, 28 medium and 5 of low importance. He also notes that security updates are currently only being released for version 2.0 of Firefox, while Microsoft provides full support for earlier versions of Internet Explorer.

  3. Microsoft will Automatically Update Internet Explorer, if You Let it

It makes sense. Internet browsers are the greatest vulnerability to the OS. I think IE9 was a critical security update for me on Windows 7 so don't really see how this is any different.

  4. The Windows August 2023 security updates fix critical vulnerabilities and Internet Explorer

New Internet Explorer security hole found.

A few websites have been posting the code for the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. Unfortunately, this means that hackers can find vulnerabilities in the code, which they have done. The most recent secuirty hole allows for hackers to remotely hijack a computer, and can be triggered by a rigged multimedia webpage. The fault is mainly due to ActiveX and active scripting problems. Until Microsoft has a patch for this critical flaw, they advise users of Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6 to disable ActiveX controls and active scripting. Running Internet Explorer in Windows Server 2003 with Enhanced Security Configuration does not allow the security hole to be exploited.
