    There is no disk...error

My system has been wonky since the last update. Performance has taken a major hit, although I've recovered some of it with help of this forum. It's not yet back to where it was though.

Today a new issue popped up.

Whenever I open File Explorer, I get a "No Disk..." error for drive E.

    I don't have a drive E.

    C, D, F is what I've always had.

It also comes up when I load my Photoshop CS3. Seems I can't do three or four things before that annoying error pops up.

    Any ideas?
    TIA

    :)

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddiskvolume8

What happens after performing the DISM? Is it still the same?

What was the last thing that you have done before this problem start to occur?

Have you tried performing the repair upgrade suggested by the moderator? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

My guess is CS3 or some other dependencies were installed to a drive E: at some point - some registry entires relating to it can't be found. May try searching the registry for "E:" and see if it finds anything...

I just installed a new gif editing app a few moments ago and can't even open it as it keeps popping up the "E" drive error. It's affecting multiple applications apparently.

Anyway, I went through registry as you suggested and sure enough there are a lot of E:\ references there. Deleted if app no longer existed, and corrected for those that still do (or uninstalled them completely).

The goofy thing is that many of these are on my D:\Program Files (x86) and had been working just fine up until today. Something reverted these to E:\!!!

    Lousy updates!

    Thanks for the pointer.

It would be helpful if you could post screenshots of your Disk Management window - expanded so we can see everything.
And a shot of Windows Explorer, with "This PC" Highlighted.

Looks like my thread got moved to Drivers and Hardware. It could be software. Anyway...

My Disk Management now doesn't seem to want to start. It first created a popup to insert a disk into USB drive E:. USB drive E??

"Loading disk configuration information..." and then nothing when trying to start DM.

Several attempts to cancel popup for USB Drive E and DM eventually comes up.

I'm thinking that USB drive E: must be the storage of the Epson R320 printer. Why would it bug me about it now? I never use that.

As soon as I disconnected the USB cable from my printer, the "E Drive" seen here went away.

I've never had any issues with my printer or these crazy popups until this morning. All these wacky happenings all started with the update. Now I'm seeing the 'wait' spinny thing every click I take it seems.

In Devices and Printers, I noticed that there is now an extra printer icon called USB device. It was grayed out because I removed my printer usb. So I removed device, then plugged back in my printer usb. It created another Epson printer icon, making it a copy. So I removed the original that was grayed out. This leaves only one Epson printer icon now.

And it appears I'm no longer getting the E: Drive error.

    Thanks.

Hhmmm.. so the device is being recognized but Windows cannot identify it? I suppose a driver problem, but then why see it as a storage device in the first place? Surely if it cant IRQ the device it should ignore it? Kind-of raises more questions than answers.

Perhaps. However, this particular printer you can't get the driver from Epson. They state that it is already included within Windows 10. So I allowed Windows 10 to install the driver.

I have an Epson All-in-One printer and it has always shown the card reader on the printer as a removable drive in Windows. Very annoying, but not troublesome like your is.
I gave that "drive" a letter far away - W. That way it does not affect actual drive letter listings. You might try that.

You can install the Windows 7 driver in compatibility mode for Windows 10. (or W8 if they have one).
That won't get rid of the "Removable Drive" but it might correct the problem you are having.
