It's been like this since September 13, 2017.
I also ran the Windows Update Mini Tool and still couldn't get updates.

    Windows Update is running.

I've looked up the error code and it refers to having Microsoft Security Essentials,
as well as Windows Defender installed.
However, I can't find anything related to Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my machine.

Anyone know how to address this issue?

    :)

    Thanks for your reply.
I checked the link you offered and couldn't find anything related to my issue, other then the same error code.
I built the computer myself and didn't install McAfee, Norton or any other stuff like that.
I'll have to do more searching, as you suggested.

    Hi,
    suggests a clue.

You could also check your event log to see what that says.

    Run the troubleshooter.

I've run the troubleshooter before and have run it again according to your suggestions.
The troubleshooter shows the same results as it did before.

The Windows Update Settings page states that my device is up to date.
However, when I run Windows Updates. I get the same message using the same 0x80070426 error code.

The Windows Update Page is now showing this, after checking for updates this morning at 6:40am on 9/28/2017.

Please check your event log to see what that says. There should be reports related to that error.

It would be interesting to see your Update History too please.

    This suggests a clue.

Please post a screenshot of each of the 3 services shown here as shown by services.msc

Thanks for these suggestions, but I don't know how to find stuff using the Event Viewer, I wouldn't know where to look.
Also, where do I find my update history, so I can post it for you to see?

I also get this from Windows Defender, when I try to check for updates.

I don't know what going on, but something doesn't seem right about all this.

Cortana search or Settings search for Update History

Again the clue at the end of your post, for which thanks, I'll look thru it, is that 'the service hasn't been started'.

So it seems some service is in the wrong state or unable to run for whatever reason.

As you can already see, the state of the Windows Update service is different to mine (in two ways).
RPC, RPC Endoint... & DCOM server.... are the same as mine.

    Event log:
Windows has an Event Viewer (search for it) but it's cumbersome and awkward.

Event Log Explorer (freeware) is more user friendly and supports searching.

As this may be daunting, you might try
    a. Noting the time of the event (fault report)
    b. Typing Reli in cortana's search bar and clicking on Reliability History

"There were problems installing updates" [IMG]

    - You might find a report related to the update failure there.
If so, click on it and post any more detail.

But this is a very small selection of reports, and it may well not be included there.

I ran this tool by clicking on Windows Validation and I'm not sure I want to post the results.
    Isn't this sensitive stuff?

It does say that the Validation Status is Genuine and that Data Integrity pass.

I haven't changed the status of the windows update service.
There is no option to set this service to Manual (Triggered Start)

Here is a screenshot of what I think is my update history.
