Glad to see you are back up and running with updates! Good job!

Remember to do a system image backup when you are finished, to save your effort and work.

Don't know what you use, but Macrium is highly recommended here. It's free.

    Thanks!
    That is my plan.
I do make periodic system images to an external drive, but the last one I made was the one I just did the repair on.
I'll be sure to make a system image from this new install.

I was trying to avoid having to do the in-place upgrade, but everything I tried did on good.
Things seem to be back to "normal" now and I thank all of you, that gave their time to help with this issue.

That option is the only one that will save your apps and data. And clean/fix all the baddies. It's worth the time.

Use a disk imaging program that creates an image of all your windows partitions, and allows you to update it quickly.

(Macrium, SSD, USB3- a differential image in under 12 mins if I recall).

    Yes I agree.
All the time I spent trying to fix this issue myself, I could have spent doing the in-place upgrade instead.
The deeper I went into trying to fix this issue, the crazier it became.
All signs were pointing to the in-place upgrade, but I couldn't, or didn't want to see the forest for the trees.
    Live and learn.

    Thanks!
I'm familiar with Macrium Reflect and will us it, in place of the Windows Built-in system image creator, which is what I was using.

That's good, because MS is dropping their Built-in (SIB) in the Fall Creators Update.

    I wasn't aware of that.
    Thanks for the heads-up.
