Windows 10: Theres NO excuse for NOT taking Backups 8 Mins for Windows !!

There's no excuse these days for NOT taking backups

Windows 10 X-64 on laptop -- 232 GB SSD backed up to external 232 GB SSD connected via USB3-->sata connector.

8 Mins to do --and that includes running an active Virtual Machine while the backup was running. The VM also included in the backup. Imaged the HDD rather than cloning.

Free Macrium -- it's a NO BRAINER not to use it if you don't have proper backup software.

Pretty decent I/O speeds for a laptop too. If you've got money spare invest in SSD -- that gives you probably better performance improvement over almost anything else.

Is Windows 7 or Windows 8 currently installed on your computer?

 

Good advice Jimbo!

I can do a system image backup (using Macrium) in just over 2 minutes using the same back scheme (SSD to SSD) as you. Of course, my installation is much smaller than yours (16.5 GBs) but the speed allows me to do a system image backup every day and you can't get any better protection than that IMHO.

Jimbo - Which USB3 --> sata connector are you using ?

 

Even though my Macrium Reflect full image OS backup takes much longer than 8 minutes, I average one a week for now.

 

No matter how long it takes (my image backup takes about 2 hours with an external HD USB 3) it's necessary.
I image & clone backup - belt & braces approach.

A load are "Chinese / Taiwanese / Korean generic" but this is what mine looks like and the same spec.

Got from the UK --arrived in 2 days @ 10 EUR. I'm sure product easily sourceable in mainland Europe and USA -- 10 EUR about 9.50 USD.

Yeah always a good idea to make your complete image backups. I only use Macrium myself too. Takes me about 13 mins to make a complete image backup and then it verifies the backup. *Smile

 

Thanks for getting back to me. The reason I asked is because I several external Esata drive enclosures and was using them on my old PC which had Esata on the Mother board. I replaced that system with a new one that supports USB 3.1 and USB 3.0, but NO Esata. So I purchased this unit https://www.amazon.com/BYTECC-Bytecc.../dp/B003EMJ34U to use with it but it never gets recognized by the system. I tried it on my older Win 10 laptop (which supports USB 3.0) and there it works like a charm. Speed is good also.

I just may pick up a different unit and try it on my new system.

 

It depends on hardware. My old laptop takes nearer 8 hours for a full Macrium image & verify, with its slow disk and slow USB port (I'm not even sure it's as recent as USB 2, let alone USB 3)

Good external USB 3 HDD connection system is : the 2-bay Hornettek X2-U3 Dual Bay USB3.0 hard drive enclosure HT-3210U3

Get the RAID one -- I've got 2 of these both fitted with 2 X 3 TB 7200 rpm Blue Seagate HDD's.





Brilliant piece of kit -- you can set to RAID 0, Raid1, JBOD or individual Disks --I use as RAID 0 --nice and fast and as these are not connected all the time RAID 0 is perfectly OK. When disconnected from the computer the device powers off without you having to "switch off" from the mains --recommended piece of kit. Approx 45 EUR plus the cost of the HDD's of course.

HDD's just slide in -- note though not "Hot swappable" and if changing from say individual HDD mode to RAID you need to press the reset switch inside the unit while it's powered on, But small, unobtrusive and a great way of using old HDD's (note must be SATA type - you can't use old IDE only HDD's in the unit).


No computer drivers needed even when in RAID mode -- computer sees as Prolific USB->Sata Bridge.

Actually it was only 6 hours, but it's still a case of leaving it to run overnight.
I was a good reminder for me to do a backup though.
