Windows 10: ThinkPad Yoga Creators Edition won't boot, won't restore, won't reset.

Hello. I'm new here, so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section, and I also apologize for the length of the post, cause I've been wrestling with this for almost a week and there's a lot of stuff I've tried.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoda, and a day or two before the crash I've updated to Creators Edition. Everything went fine, the laptop booted and I continued working on it. Then a while later I've noticed my sound was gone, so I opened the Sound settings and everything looked good ("this device is working properly"), but the test sounds wouldn't play (it returned an error, but I forgot what it was). I first went for the System Restore, but all my restore points were gone (I'm pretty sure Creators update created a point when it installed, so there should have been some restore points there). I've done the usual Automatic Repair, chkdsk, sfc, fixboot, fixmbr, nothing worked. I've tried DISM using a Windows 10 Pro ISO I downloaded from MS, it says no errors, but doesn't fix the problem. I can't access Safe Mode (with any options) nor does any other option from the menu work (disable driver signature, anti-malware protection, etc...).

SrtTtrail.txt doesn't have any errors logged, all that it gives me is "A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting". I've looked through the logs but there was no new driver installed recently. 

Then I tried the Windows PE Bootable Media (the thing that boots into a Windows-like live OS http://www.disk-partition.com/pe-bui...er/desktop.png) but that thing proved to be completely useless. But while I was looking through the available tools trying to find anything helpful, I made a mistake of running some "fix" that ruined my boot record, so when I restarted, instead of the Repair screen from before, I got this: Dropbox - Friday, Jun 16

I've tried rebuilding the BCD (by assigning a letter to the boot partition and running the bcdboot with it), but I still get the new BSOD. So, at this point, I've pretty much accepted that my Windows are foo-bared (although if you have any fresh ideas, I'm willing to try anything), so I just wanted to reset my laptop to factory (Windows 8 pro *Sad ). I can access the recovery environment by pressing F11, but when I try Refresh, I get an error, and when I try Reset, I'm asked for an installation disk. I'm not sure at this point this is even reaching my Lenovo Recovery Partition. I can access the Lenovo recovery partition if I assign it a letter, I've even copied it to USB just in case, but I have no idea how to use it and what to do with it. I've tried playing with ReAgent, but I don't really know how to make it work. When I run ReAgentc /info I get this: Dropbox - Friday, Jun 16 . And my bcdedit looks like this: Dropbox - Friday, Jun 16 and my partitions look like this: Dropbox - Friday, Jun 16

If you have any idea how to repair the installation, that would be awesome, but at this point, I'd settle for just being able to reset it to factory settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 15 and am running Windows 10 - for some reason, my laptop now will get to the Thinkpad startup screen and then go black after that, no Windows logo at all. There is, however, still backlight on the screen, so it just
seems like nothing is being displayed. I've run the diagnostics tests and there are no bad sectors on the hard drive, but when I tried to go into the system's recovery option the screen went black again. Any ideas on what I can do?

I'm trying to help a friend on this as well. No boot disk, no boot thumb drive, system restore won't work; system recovery won't work.

90% of BSODs are usually caused from driver issues. Have you considered a clean install?

Yeah, I've already downloaded a new ISO from MS... I'd just like to see if I can get my Lenovo recovery partition working first. I don't know if a clean install will give me access to the recovery options, and I'd either like to keep the recovery partition in case Windows crashes again, or if I can't get it to work, just delete the partition so it doesn't take up space.

 

Yes, it gets to the point where one has to make decisions on a point of no return. Someone gave me a lappy that said it was a paper weight, but it ended up being a corrupt boot record. I was able to repair that to get into the recovery partition to restore 7. While clean installing 10 on it I deleted the OEM partition. IMO all crapware anyway.

The WinPE didn't repair anything you say?

OK, I've played a bit with the tools on the rescue disk, but I haven't managed to do anything. So, my question is this: is it possible to set up the BCD in such a way as to point to the Lenovo partition as the source for the recovery image? Do Windows and the RE (the one I access by pressing F11) use the same BCD?

At this point, it's not just about getting my laptop to work, I want to understand these things so I'd know what to do the next time this happens.

 

Not familiar with Lenovo recovery partitions. Not sure why it's asking you for recovery media. Did it ask you to make the media upon first boot when new? That's if you bought new.

I don't remember the tool I used on the rescue disk to repair the boot record, so I'll have to look. Even if you succeed at that, you still have a messed up OS.

BTW, System Restore is off by default upon W10 install/upgrade, so you won't have any unless you turn it on.

 

You said you have a W10 ISO. Have you tried to boot up with that and use the repair option?

It didn't ask me, but Lenovo does recommend making a rescue disk (which I didn't know until now, so I didn't make one :/). The partition is some 13GB large and has a folder named RecoveryImage, with an install.wim and some .cmd scripts inside. So there's definitely a Windows image there (should be 8.1 pro), but the RE just doesn't see it. I assume that's because I've messed up the original BCD, but that's just my hunch.

I know. I usually enable it when I install the OS (or buy a new computer), but it's been over two years (during which the OS worked flawlessly so I never needed it) and I honestly can't remember if I did that. It did say during the Creators upgrade that it was creating a restore point, but if it really did, I honestly don't know. I did read a lot of people complaining about their System Restore data vanishing as well, so there might be something strange going on, a virus or maybe the Creators update itself is messed up, I don't know.

I've used the Media Creation tool to boot into PE, and I've tried most of my attempt recoveries from there (as opposed to the one I can get through F11, since that one seems to be from on older version of Windows (Win8 from what I can tell)). I've tried running Automatic Repair from both with no success. I've also downloaded a complete Windows 10 ISO to use with DISM, but that didn't fix anything either.

Shouldn't I have something in my ReAgent file? There's nothing there, no Windows RE location, no BCD ID, no recovery image location, no nothing. There should be something there, right? Dropbox - Friday, Jun 16

TBO that's getting way beyond my skill level. The thing is your system is UEFI which means your drive is formatted in GPT, not the legacy MBR type. And I'm afraid to mess you system up even more. Let me go ask some friends for help.
