So, I was on my computer tonight trying to move some video files from my phone to the computer. Had everything hooked up, everything was working except for Windows Photos taking pretty long to "find new photos," so I went on my phone's USB settings. Under the "USB Controlled by" setting, it was set to This phone. I tried clicking it over to Connected Device, it says "unable to change host" and suddenly the phone "has malfunctioned" every time I plug it in.

The full error code is "This device cannot start. Code 10 A request for the Microsoft OS container ID descriptor failed."

Note that I only get this malfunction error when the phone is set to Transferring Files/Android Auto. The phone is recognized in any other mode, like MDI, system update, etc.

Things I have tried:

It is not my cable, USB connector, or hub.

My phone's cache has been cleared

I have done that registry trick that a lot of forums have suggested.

Uninstalled device

Installed Samsung Dex

Installed Samsung Smart Switch

Installed CCleaner

None of these have worked. I managed to use Dex to get my files before all this happened, but the videos copied from Dex have a codec that I need to pay for which I will not do. Besides, I need to have this working as a basic function I use.

Any help is appreciated.

Step To Recreate

Windows 10: Your Phone app, click 'Phone Screen'

Windows 10: Your Phone app, "We need permission to display your phone screen"

Galaxy S10: Notification, "Connected to Your Phone app on <hostname>"

Galaxy S10: Notification, "Accept connection?" > Accept

Windows 10: Your Phone App, ERROR: "Connect to the same WiFi"

Points To Note

Windows 10 device is connected via WiFi to Galaxy S10's WiFi hotspot i.e. tethered

Galaxy S10 device is connected to the Internet via the mobile phone network

Galaxy S10 Link To Windows app is configured to "Use mobile data"

Both Windows 10 Your Phone app and Galaxy S10 Link To Windows app connected to same Microsoft account

All other Windows 10 Your Phone app features work flawlessly e.g. Calls, Messages, Photos, Notifications etc

Anyone know how to fix this? Everything else works fine, just this feature is broken.

Uninstalled / reinstalled / reconnected all apps

Continue on PC not working in Samsung Galaxy S10

I understand that you are unable to use Continue on PC feature in your Samsung Galaxy S10 phone, we will look into this for you. However, we will need few more information from you. Please reply with the following details:

What happens when you use the Continue on PC feature on your phone?

Do you read any error message? If yes, what is the error message?

Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? To check type:
winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit
Enter.

You can also try unlinking your phone and linking it back, refer the section
