Windows 10: this file does not have an app associated with it please install an app or if one already...

Started randomly to appear. I receive this message - this file does not have an app associated with it please install an app or if one already is installed, create an association in the default apps settings page when i try to open folder in my documents folder, or when i try to open disk C or D folders on my pc. The only option to open is via new tab. I may have found something - when i go to cmd command and type "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile /v IsShortcut /t REG_SZ" I receive "The system cannot find the path specified." Not sure where to go next here. The other tutorials did not help me, I ha

After Windows INSTALLED A NEW REALEASE [AUTO] My Apps started missing

Thanks, am on: OS 1909 version 18363.900
BUT: STICKY NOTES is listed on apps but is GREYED OUT.
CALCULATOR is nowhere to be found, not on app list, search finds nothing.

When I try to GET anything from MICROSOFT STORE, I get a popup:

This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default Apps Setting range

Where do you suggest I go from here?

1. I tried using the troubleshooter but it didn't list the WinRail application. It gave me a list and asked me to choose which application to uninstall. I chose Not Listed. Then it asked for a product ID. I didn't have one because I had not purchased
it - I was evaluating it. So it let me go no further. It will not continue without a product ID.

2. As I mentioned in my first note, I already tried to uninstall it from the uninstall file in the WinRail directory. I got the same error that I did when I used add/remove programs:
"This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app, or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps control panel."

Next step?

The reason I downloaded the WinRail app in the first place was to open an .RAL file sent to us from a client. It should have been a data file but I had nothing to open it. All I could find was WinRail (where I could use a free demo...all of the other apps
cost something but they were all also model train design apps like WinRail). I talked to someone today who said that an .RAL file is used for extra compression on very large files. I asked if they meant .RAR and they said no. What do you know about .RAL
files? Thanks again.

I think it's the extra steps that he doesn't like. But that should also work.
