Three computers on my LAN: two are VERY slow, one is fast.

    Folks,

I have three desktops on my LAN, all hooked up the same way: ethernet cable to a gigabit switch. The switch goes to my router.

All three run Win10. I have fiber-optic cable and I pay for 100Mbps service. According to Speedtest.net, I get a that speed (a little over), on all three machines.

Going to a specific download server and retrieving a specific 5GB file produces very odd results:

Machine A shows 10-12 HOURS to download.
Machine B shows ~5 HOURS to download.
Machine C shows 11 MINUTES to download (and actually did it faster, about 6 minutes).

Letting them sit, these times are solid and seem correct. I let Machine A try for 3 hours and it downloaded about 1/4 of the file (according to the download graphic, a pie with a wedge that increases). So, these do seem accurate.

(Running the math, 5GB is about 5*8*1000 Mb or 40,000 Mb. My speed of 100 Mbps means a download time of about 400 seconds. That's a bit over 6 minutes, or pretty much spot-on with what Machine C actually performed.)

It's obvious that my network is sufficient. Machine C is the proof. How do I begin to track down the configuration errors that are making Machines A and B so slow?

All machines are using their motherboard NIC. All are rated at Gigabit speeds. All computers access speedtest.net and show 100Mbps or better.

This one has me totally stumped.

I've stripped Kaspersky off of Machine A and B. Machine C only used Windows Defender. I made it so A and B also only used Defender, but that did not increase their download speeds. I don't think it's the antivirus/firewall setting, but I'm open to specific suggestions.

All three machines are on Win10, v1903, Build 18362.476

    A: intel 6700k/Z170 mobo, 64GB 2400Mhz Ram
    B: intel 4790k/Z87 mobo, 32GB 2400Mhz Ram
    C: AMD 2700x/X470 mobo, 32GB 3200Mhz Ram

Using my LAN, I can transfer the 5GB file from C to A in 45 seconds at a sustained, average, speed of 112 MBps.

Something is choking down my internet...it seems to be specific to Comps A and B.

    Thanks for any assists.

    Ken

    :)

    Good LAN party games?

Most of my suggestions have already been listed.

However, I found Swat4 to actually be a pretty fun LAN game, especially at smaller LAN parties.

  3. Slow Computer

    Hi Sheree,

One of the most common reasons for a slow computer are programs running in the background. Other factors that can contribute to the issue are memory space, malware infection, outdated software, and processor overheating. To improve your computer's performance,
you can check the tips listed on this link. We suggest that you also try to follow the suggested steps.

Feel free to post back if you have further questions.
