Thumbnail images are too small on an UHD monitor; don’t change size with monitor scaling

The File Explorer that comes with Windows 11 offers four different sizes for thumbnail previews of image files. With an UHD monitor, even the largest setting is too small. In the settings, Windows suggests a scaling of 150 % for a 80 cm/32 inch monitor with UHD, and for comparison a 100 % scaling on a 60 cm/24 inch monitor with HD resolution. The size of the text changes with the monitor scaling, but not the size of the File Explorer thumbnails. As a result, the thumbnails are much larger on an HD monitor than on an UHD monitor. My thumbnails on UHD are too small to even differentiate peop

  2. New monitor, UHD, thumbnails do not scale up in windows explorer.

I bought a new UHD monitor. I expected that some programs might not scale up, but I didn't expect to see that in win10 explorer.

At 1280 x 720 resolution, the 'extra large' thumbnails filled the entire window space, nearly touched each other.
At 3840 x 2160 (and that is not even the highest it goes) I can barely see what's in the picture and they don't get any bigger than that! Scaling is set at 300%, but explorer thumbnails apparently didn't get the memo.

I put them side by side for comparison. Same spacing (only 3 per row) but the thumbnails are too small to be useful.

Is there any way to get the thumbnails to scale up to 300%?

    Thank you for your time.

  3. Laptop Monitor changes display percentages when switching to external monitor

    Hi prime2121,

I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.

Some laptop monitors have the scale set automatically to 125% due to their small size, and external monitors set to 100%. That is why when changing monitors the text and display sizes change. You can set it on Settings > System > Display > Scale and layout

Display Scaling Blurry text when using multiple monitors. Blurry text affects secondary monitor that has no scaling.

When using Scaling on my primary monitor for example 125%, text on my secondary monitor becomes blurry with some applications.

My primary monitor is a 32" HP Omen 2560x1440 and my secondary monitor is 24" Asus 1920x1080.

I've managed to capture the blurry text as a screenshot from the same secondary monitor that should not have any scaling applied.

    Steps to replicate.

Set primary monitor to 125% scaling (32" HP Omen 2560x1440).

    Windows 10 > Settings > System > Display > Scale and Layout > 125%

Secondary monitor (24" 1920x1080) should be at default 100%.

Sign Out to confirm scale changes.

Open Control Panel classic and change View By to Small Items.

Move Control Panel window to secondary monitor.

    Results

    Primary monitor scaled 125%.

Control Panel items viewed on Secondary Monitor that should have no scaling.

    Text is blurry !

    Primary monitor scaled 100% (default)

Control Panel items again viewed on Secondary Monitor.

    No issues with text.
