Function keys performing the wrong function


F1 for Help, F11 for full screen and so on, those are the normal functions of F keys. On laptops you can use the manufacturer specific alternative functions by pressing and holding down the FN key then pressing preferred F key. In you case I bet that if you press FN + F1 instead of just F1, it works in the way Dell has customized it, as mute / unmute.

Most laptops allow user to set default function key action in BIOS / UEFI settings. In your case it sounds that your laptop was earlier set to give Dell specific functions without FN key and normal functions with it, and now it has been changed to give normal standard functions without FN key and Dell specific functions with it.

My Toshiba laptop has a Fn key. When pressed, the ESC key acts as a speaker mute switch. Most of the top row of keys have a second function with the Fn key, F6/F7 are the brightness down/up controls and F8 turns the WiFi off, for example. Does your Dell Workstation M6800M6800 not have some something similar?

Disable/Change Function Key Configuration?

I am a frequent game player, and a lot of the games I play have me using the function keys (F1-12) semi-frequently. However, when I press the function keys, the game does not recognize the button, but instead the computer does. In turn, if I want to press
F1 in a game, it just mutes my sound instead of doing the thing in the game.

My question is, how do I disable; or at least change the configuration of the function keys so I need to hold Fn to activate them?

PLEASE NOTE: I have tried the Windows Mobility Center, and there is pretty much nothing there that would help my problem.
