Windows 10: To Go From Windows 10 TP To Windows 10 RTM

So I have been a member here for a little while, and I have had fun playing with different Windows 10 technical preview builds, but just like everybody else I am getting ready to make the move to Windows 10 RTM version. In my case I want to leave the technical previews behind and just want to install the Windows 10 RTM version. My understanding is that I must first uninstall my Windows 10 technical preview version and then install my original Windows 8.1 on this machine, then install the Windows 10 RTM over that. Is this the way that it must be done, or am I misunderstanding something?

Yes, your observation is correct, but the user I responded to said that he wiped Windows 7 from the computer and install Windows 10 TP instead.

In this case he cannot upgrade to Windows 10 RTM based on his Windows 7 license.

Because he didn't install Windows 10 TP by upgrading.

Upgrading from clean install Windows 10 TP to final

As far as I know, Microsoft has only confirmed free upgrade from Windows 10 TP to RTM if the computer originally had Windows 7 or 8.1. I'm just curious if people who did clean installs of TP (as in, on a separate partition or from Vista/XP) also get RTM
for free, or if they have to pay.

I know this question has been previously asked, but there was no definitive conclusion there. With less than 2 weeks before RTM comes out, I feel like this question deserves to be answered now.

 

That's my understanding as well. I'm going from my current OS(WIn8.1) and upgrading to Win10 on the 29th of July. If there is a way to go from the preview to the RTM I'm not aware of it.

 

I think it depends how you installed the Preview.

From this Microsoft blog post

So if you installed Preview over 7 or 8.1 (and I'm going to speculate that it might only work if you did that with a recent version of Preview) then that suggests you would be able to go straight to RTM and leave the Insider program

 

I have Windows 10 on it's own HD and I am going to continue using the TP after the RTM. It is my understanding that this is possible as new builds will still be released. I do not plan to upgrade Win 7 for at least a couple of months. The image below is from Blogging Windows:

 

That might be correct.. but I'll stick with the Win8.1 => RTM method.
