The Making of the Top 100 Researcher List

At Black Hat USA each year, we unveil the Top 100 Security Researcher list to reflect the amazing engagement we get from the community. During this period, we had several thousand researchers engage with the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC). We appreciate all the partnership and coordination that goes on throughout the year. The Top 100 list gives us a chance to give a special shout out to some of the most productive researchers in the year. As we get closer to the reveal, a common theme in questions around the unveiling is, “how do I get my name up there?” This year we will give you an insider view into the making of the Top 100 list.

To produce the list, we first start with all cases fixed between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. We take this first slice to reflect the cases that were addressed. Reports that end up being fixed later will get counted in the following year’s tally. We then sort by acknowledgements to determine the researcher and extrapolate from those reporting through third parties, like ZDI or iDefense. Now enters the math. Not all vulnerabilities are the same. We weigh the list based off security impact and then assigned severity. We do this to focus and recognize research that has larger impact on customers. Security impact is differentiated on a scale of 1-20 and severity is scored 1-3. Finally, we adjust to acknowledge the research in the Mitigation Bounty and Bounty for Defense that typically have lower security impacts, but broaden defenses for all customers. Then it is just a matter of drawing the line at 100. Researchers with the same weighted score are given the same listing on the chart. We cut the number as close to 100 as possible, accounting for ties.

The list is final and will be unveiled at Black Hat USA the morning of Wednesday, August, 8th. We will also post the results in our blog and at the Microsoft Community Party during Black Hat. Thank you to all our researchers for the hard work and partnership you have had with us throughout the year. We look forward to working with you more in the year to come.

MSRC 2017 list of Top 100 security researchers

Security researchers play an essential role in Microsoft’s security strategy and are key to community-based defense. To show our appreciation for their hard work and partnership, each year at BlackHat North America, the Microsoft Security Response Center highlights contributions of these researchers through the list of “Top 100” security researchers reporting to Microsoft.

This list ranks security researchers reporting directly to Microsoft according to the quantity and quality of all reports for which we’ve issued fixes. While one criteria for the ranking is volume of reports a researcher has made, the severity and impact of the reports is very important to the ranking. Higher-impact issues carry more weight than lower-impact ones. While this list does not include security researchers who report to our partners ZDI and iDefense as we do not always have full information to recognize their efforts, we very much appreciate the partnership with ZDI and iDefense as they ensure that we know about any reports affecting Microsoft products.

Given the number of individuals reporting to Microsoft, anyone ranked among the Top 100 is among some of the top talent in the industry. Regardless of where security researchers are ranked in this list, we appreciate their active and ongoing participation with the Microsoft Security Response Center, and encourage new researchers to report potential vulnerabilities to us at L: secure@microsoft.com. We’re excited to see who’s going to be on the list next year.

Edge Search Does Not Permit Change of Region

I got these suggestions from the Microsoft Community forum.No. 1 worked for me:

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am glad to assist you on this.
We have reproduce the issue here and we are able to access non-regional search for google using Microsoft Edge.
I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.
Step 1:
Clear browsing data option of Microsoft Edge and check if you face the issue. To do so perform the steps below.

Click on the More actions icon next to the feedback icon present on top right corner of the Project Spartan homepage.

Select Settings and click on Choose what to clear.

Check the boxes Browsing history, Cookies and saved website data and Cached data and files and click on Clear.

Step 2:
I suggest you to create a new user account and check if the issue occurs.

Go to Settings.

Choose Accounts and then select Family and other users.

Select add someone else on this PC.

Enter a user name and hit next.

Click on Finish.

Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.

Step 3:
It could also happen because of network issue. I suggest you to try with different network connection and check if it helps.
