  1. Total Boot Failure After Removing Second SSD - Win 10

Windows 10: I have a primary disc for the OS and a secondary disc for just data or maybe not???. I took out the secondary disc in order to a bigger one in and rebooted. I got a boot failure and Windows automatically tried to repair the issue, but it failed. I then replaced the secondary disc so system is back as it was, but this did not solve the problem. During the "automatic repair process" it must have broken something. The only thing that comes to mind is I may have split the pagefile to both discs, so when I took the data disc out it may have gotten confused. So far, I have seemingly

Boot failure after removal of Win 7 HDD

I recently upgraded to Win 10 by installing it on a new SSD, leaving my previous Win 7 SSD intact. I also didn't remove the Win 7 SSD as I planned on formatting it and using it for storage.

It all worked and it even recognized the Win 7 disk and gave me a dual boot option on startup.

Now I want to remove the Win 7 disk entirely, as I don't need the storage after all. Problem is, after removal, windows won't boot. I get the message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

    I've tried the following:

    - confirmed in bios that the Win 10 disk is the one booting

    - plugged the Win 10 disk into its original SATA channel (as opposed to the channel for the removed Win 7 disk)

    - ran startup diagnostic using the Win 10 disk - no errors found

So I don't know why it's giving an error. I should only need the Win 10 disk, as far as I know. In any case, plugging the Win 7 drive back in makes it boot as normal.

I wondered about formatting the Win 7 disk and booting that way, to maybe get windows used to not having two operating systems, but this might cause the same problem?

I want to avoid re-installing Windows with only the Win 10 disk installed in order to get around this. However, if that's the way it must go, another question: I wondered about getting a M.2 disk instead of the 2.5" SATA one in order to
use it on a future Motherboard, and for now to use it with a SATA adapter. Is there any disadvantage to this, or will it perform similar to a regular SATA drive?

    Thanks in advance!

Win 10 doesn't recognize second Win XP ntfs formatted old data disc (not boot disc)

    Hi,

sorry but I think that your suggestion doesn't have sense.

    1) When SSD SanDisk Ultra II 240GB (Win 10 boot disc) is connected as the only
    disc drive, everything works OK.

    2) When HDD WD Caviar 320 GB is connected as the second drive (data disc) running under Win XP (first drive is Win XP boot disc), it works OK.

    3) When HDD WD Caviar is connected as the second drive (completly erased unformatted disc) in combination with the SSD
SanDisk as the primary Win 10 boot disc, the Win 10 boot up crashes.

I really have no more intention to waste time diagnosing bugs of the operating system Windows 10, which by the way I paid dearly.

When you remove the obvious Win 10 bug, please let me know so I can connect the second drive.

    Thank you for your help.

HELP! Win 10 won't boot when secondary SSD removed

    Hi all,

I have encountered an issue where my win 10 will freeze during startup. I have two SSD drives on my PC, C and D, where C drive is the one with Win 10 installed, while D drive is used to store documents, photos, etc as well as large non-system applications such as games.

Recently I noticed that all changes to my D drive (creating new files or deleting old files) reverts back whenever I reboot. Searched online suggested that the SSD has worn out and entered into read-only mode.

My C drive is still space, so I moved all my D drive files and applications to C, and proceed to remove D from the PC. Now however, when I try to reboot, PC freezes at the startup screen (the screen that dots running in circles). Searching online, suggest that it might be because boot files are installed into D drive which is needed at boot, if you install windows with both SSD connected to the motherboard (which I think was the case for me). However I cannot be sure if boot record misplacement is the cause for me, or it may simply be some windows config issue? because:

    - I can enter into safe mode without D drive, should I be able to do that if it's boot file issue?
    - In BIOS it only shows 1 bootable partition, which I belive that partition is located in C drive, not D.
    - my disk management shows the following:

Total Boot Failure After Removing Second SSD - Win 10 [IMG]

    - bcdedit shows:

Total Boot Failure After Removing Second SSD - Win 10 [IMG]

Can some expert help me identify the cause of the issue and what steps I can take to verify the cause? I'm at a loss here and does not know where to begin.

    Very appreciated!
