Windows 10: Transfer applications from old system drive

Situation: A user not me had a power supply fail in a desktop computer. The system drive is still good. Attempted to plug the old system drive into a different computer but the system wouldn't boot. Went into the BIOS and still couldn't get it to boot properly. The system drive in the 2nd computer had been removed.Re-installed the system drive from the second computer and the machine now boots.Problem: The first system drive is now just a secondary drive and programs are not accessible. new system old hard drive...

I have an old hard drive that has those old ribbon connections to transfer data to the mother board.

I have a new computer that mostly uses those cool little ATA (I think that is what they are called) connections.

The new computer has a Vista OS.

I opened up the case and I was supprised to see on the motherboard a wide ribbon connection and so I connected the old hard drive and a free power connection.

When I turned on the computer, the system started up like usual and did not notice the new hard drive.

I went to the Control Pannel and did an automatic add hard drive call and it did not find the old hard drive.

Any suggestions?

I Think the win 10 machine that formatted it suggested GPT So Im fairly sure that it is formatted as a single 4 TB GPT volume Your bios is probably so old it doesn't understand GPT and is just reporting the maximum size available should the drive be formatted as MBR. This is for information only, the bios isn't imposing any limits. Once booted to Windows the OS knows how to handle GPT, there should be nothing to worry about.

To transfer files from your old laptop to your new one, you can use a Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive or a thumb drive. Follow the steps below:

• Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port of your laptop.
  
• Wait for the laptop to detect the USB drive.
• Open a window for the files that you want to transfer and another window for the USB drive.
  
• Select the files that you want to transfer, right-click and then click on
  Cut or Copy.
  
• On the destination window, right-click and select Paste.
  
• Make sure that files are completely transferred before removing the USB flash drive.
• Insert the USB into your new laptop.
• Access the files once the USB drive is detected.
• Repeat the same procedure on how you transferred or copied the files from your old laptop to the flash drive.
