Transfer data and apps between accounts

I have a problem on a Windows 10 Laptop. Booting and launching apps takes a long time. Once in an app it runs as it should. A friend of mine who works for Microsoft suggested that I set up a new user account. I can do that, but i've received conflicting advice on moving existing apps and data to the new account. Some say it will only work for Microsoft apps, others say it is possible, others say you can only move data, not apps. Looking for advice from someone who actually knows the truth.

    :)

Multiple questions about installing - transfer accounts etc.

According to you, the accounts were Windows built-in admin, a local admin and standard user. None of them needs to be moved.

The built-in admin account, as the name says, will be there when you boot the laptop first time. It is disabled by default, you just need to enable it. For two other accounts, simply create same accounts on laptop.

Attach the HDD to laptop using an external USB enclosure, copy contents of data folders to respective folders on laptop.

You mentioned that the desktop accounts were / are local accounts, not Microsoft accounts. See the options to get Pro here:
If you can still access Windows on desktop, boot it up, make it a Microsoft account and link license to that MS account. Tutorials:
When done, see this tutorial. It will show step by step what do on the laptop to transfer desktop license to it: Use Activation Troubleshooter in Windows 10

This article is the best I have seen about when a license transfer is possible, and when not:

  3. transferring data between user accounts

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand your query related to transferring user data from one user account to another user account. Kindly follow the steps mentioned below to transfer the data.

    1. Login to the new administrator account.
    2. Press Windows + E keys to open
      File Explorer.
    3. Now click on View tab and check the box
      Hidden items.
    4. Navigate to the location C:\Users\Old_Username, where
C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy files from.
    5. Copy all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following files:

      Ntuser.data

      Ntuser.dat.log

      Ntuser.ini
    6. Now go to C:\Users\New_Username and
Paste all the files that you have copied.

Once you transfer the user account data you can delete the user account that is not required.

Let us know how it goes.
