    Problem: I ran into a bug which was quite frustrating to figure out. I created a folder named "Drop Folder" on one of my computers so I could transfer files from my laptop. I gave full permissions to "Everyone" on the folder and also shared this folder again, "Everyone" full permissions. When I navigated to the folder it kept giving me the error "You need permissions to perform this action" when creating a new file or folder.


    Solution: You MUST navigate through "Network" and select the shared folder. I was navigating through a shared network drive labelled "Z:\" on my laptop which linked me to the PC's D:\ drive. Please note that the shared folder has the file path: \\[PC NAME]\Drop Folder RATHER THAN Z:\Drop Folder. You HAVE permissions through the Network's shared folder \\PC_NAME\Drop Folder, but you DO NOT have permissions through the mapped network drive Z:\Drop Folder.

    I don't know what you mean "Go to the computer that you do have permission". The computer that I'm using doesn't grant me permission to copy a file. I have done the routine that you suggest using the properties dialog.

    I frequently get the error message "you need permission to perform this action". Most recently, trying to copy a file from a notebook networked drive to my desktop computer.

    I'm the only person using my computers and network. Of course, I have administrator privileges. How can I keep from having this error?

    New Dell XPS-8900 running Win10. I created a Homegroup on the 8900 and joined the Homegroup with my Win8.1 laptop.

    When I try to copy a file from the laptop to the 8900 (or from the 8900 to the laptop) I get this error:
    ..... You need permission to perform this action.
    ..... You require permission from xxx to make changes to this file. (where xxx is the name of the 8900 or the laptop)

    This has to be a Win10 Homegroup problem since that laptop used to work fine on my previous Win7 PC's Homegroup. And the files on my new 8900 PC are on a data hard drive that used to be in my Win7 PC and worked fine with its Homegroup. IOW, all of the data on the laptop and on the new XPS-8900 that used to transfer fine on the Win7 Homegroup, now need permission to transfer on the 8900's Win10 Homegroup.

    FWIW, I can assign "Full control" to a file and then it will transfer. But it's too much of a hassle to have to do that for every file I want to transfer.

    Any way to fix this globally?
