    Transfer my windows 10 microsoft linked retail licence to my new PC


    Hi, so i am building a new computer, and i need to know what exact step will i have to do for transfering my windows to my new computer. I have a retail licence linked to my microsoft account. It is nor ally a windows 8 retail licence but upgraded to windows 10 for free. So, what exactly do i have to do? Do i have to deactivate the key first in my old computer? Thank you.

    Hi,

    I have retail Windows 10 Pro digital licence which is linked to my microsoft account. I want to transfer that licence to new laptop. What are the steps? Do I need to deactivate licence (and how) at first laptop and then install windows to other laptop and link
    somehow that licence to that laptop?

    Is your Windows 10 licence based on an OEM licence (came pre-installed on a PC) or Retail (purchased separately to a PC)

    If it is a Retail licence, then it will have transfer rights to a new Motherboard or PC, if it is OEM it will not . ..

    Is your Windows 10 licence a retail licence?

    Licence not linked to Microsoft Account

    There is a big misunderstanding in general about how the digital licence transfer works.

    It's intent is to allow a user to reactivate their licence in the event that the hardware fails i.e. the user is replacing a failed mobo with a similar mobo.

    It is NOT intended to allow users to transfer licences to a NEW pc like a retail licence.

    You may be lucky and the digital licence transfers but if MS consider the new device is too different from the existing device, it will not reactivate.

    You have been misled about the licence being retail from your slmgr check, because the licence key shown is for a generic key which is always returned for a user who upgraded from Windows 7/8, and also always says retail regardless of original 7/8 key.

    To reactivate new pc, you need to enter original 7/8 assuming that was a retail key.

    Do you know the original key?
