Windows 10: Transfer of Windows / Office Ownership

I purchased a laptop computer from another individual earlier this year. The laptop has a registered copy of Windows 10 Pro and the Microsoft Office Suite. When I purchased the laptop, it was the understanding that I was purchasing the laptop along with the OS and Office software.


I keep getting a message that my Microsoft has a problem and that I need to log into my Microsoft account in order to fix it. I'm unable to do that however, since the email belongs to the other individual and of course I don't know the password or answers to the security questions.


I did try to change his email to mine, but the Microsoft says, I have not supplied sufficient information.


I did contact the individual from whom I purchased the system and he is trying to work it from his end to transfer ownership to my email address.


I'm assuming that the Windows and Office applications on my machine is tied to his Microsoft account. If so, how do I go about getting the software ownership changed?

• The account on the desktop being transferred to my mom is a Microsoft Account, I also use it on my current laptop.
• I purchased MS Office 2010 for her, she said she should have the disc/product key but will look today.
• I wish to transfer ownership of MS Office 2013 currently on the desktop, I've upgraded to MS Office 2016 on my laptop.
• One of the main reasons I'm handing this down is the condition of her computer and that my gifted computer has been sitting for about six to eight months. It may have been longer but ... Should I update Windows prior to transferring ownership?

• The login you're using for your Windows 10 computer, is that a Microsoft account or a local user account?
• Do you still have the installer for the Microsoft Office 2010 suite and the product key?
• What other applications do you wish to transfer ownership?
• Which version and build of Windows 10 is installed on your computer?

Thanks for providing the details we requested. Since you're using a Microsoft account as the primary sign-in on the laptop that you will transfer ownership to, we suggest that you create a separate Microsoft account for the new owner if they don't have one
yet. Also, do take note that if the laptop was set up with your Microsoft account the digital license for the Windows 10 OS is tied to your account.

Since the disc and product key of the Microsoft Office 2010 suite is still available, what you can do is to reinstall the software and have her fill in the details during the setup process. This also applies if you would like to transfer the ownership of
the Microsoft Office 2013 suite that you currently are not using.
