  1. Transfer Windows 10 SSD to PC with locked BIOS and secure boot

    Hello,

I recently made a mistake and bought a 2nd hand PC (Thinkpad x280) with locked BIOS (supervisor), Secure Boot enabled, as well as a Win10 admin password. It probably was a corporate device... I tried to contact the seller, but he vanished and doesn't answer me anymore.
Now, in order not to lose money, I am now trying to make use of what I can with this PC. I googled "unlock supervisor BIOS ", but I understand it is quite hard (I need a backup BIOS). In reality, I could live with supervisor lock; I don't care about Linux or Windows 7. I'd just be happy as long as I can boot on Windows 10, with my own admin account.

I was thinking about the following procedure : could I remove the x280 SSD, install Windows 10 on it on another PC (non-BIOS locked but with Secure Boot enabled), then re-transfer the freshly Windows 10 SSD to the x280.

Would this work, or Secure boot prevents this kind of trick ?

Looking forward to your answer, or any other tip that could help me with my pricey black brick ! Thanks !

Windows 8 Secure Boot Feature: Not So Secure?

    • Linux
    • Linux
    • Linux
    • Linux
    • Oh and OSX
Here is a statement from a Kernal Developer at Red Hat:

I'm not sure this exploits the legacy BIOS but rather it exploits the legacy boot method on MBR drives, injecting a signed key before the OS boots, which you are correct in that it has nothing to do with Windows 8. And the simplest fix would just be to require boot drives use GPT when Secure Boot is enabled in UEFI.

  3. Windows 8 Secure Boot Feature: Not So Secure?

So Linux is switching to secure boot also? Or they have to because of UEFI?

Transfer Windows 10 SSD to PC with locked BIOS and secure boot

Seemless transfer after SSD failure and bios dual-booting

    The free solution is "gParted".
Available as bootable CD or USB stick.

After transferring partitions with gParted, you may have to use Windows boot DVD to do "startup repair".

    Cheers

[sorry: no 'explained in steps' for now.. no time :/]
