Windows 10: Transferring Retail digital licence assigned to my MS user id from dead computer to...

I have bought a replacement used pc which I need to activate a clean install of Windows 10 on.I have a Retail transferable licence which should auto transfer surely as the replacement pc is now the only device associated with my user id.When I run the trouble-shooter I get the following error : 0x803FABC3I have tried the "get-help" app and it comes up with an error when arranging a call-back: "Sorry, we couldn't connect to Microsoft services right now."I have ran the trouble-shooter on a local admin account as well and ran into the same problems.Please could someone advise either how to res

Transfer Windows 10 digital licence to another computer

Hi,

I have retail Windows 10 Pro digital licence which is linked to my microsoft account. I want to transfer that licence to new laptop. What are the steps? Do I need to deactivate licence (and how) at first laptop and then install windows to other laptop and link
somehow that licence to that laptop?

Transfer Windows 10 Licence from Old/Dead Computer to New Computer

Depends on the licence you have. How did you get your Windows 10 licence, was it via the free upgrade and was the previous system installed by the manufacturer = OEM.

OEM licences cannot be transferred, generally but recent posts suggest MS is allowing some transfers.

Retail boxed licence can be transferred to a new device.

New motherboard = new device.

 

Revoking Digital Licence -- possible ????

Digital licences are sort of half way between oem and retail. You can transfer them to a new device (regardless of original licence status) but it is not unlimited. They can only be transferred three time (At last within a short period. I have never tested doing it weeks apart). Also, digital licences cannot be transferred between virtual machines and physical machines.

Full Retail keys do not have the above restriction albeit telephone activation may be needed periodically to transfer the licence (just a security check by MS to avoid wholesale piracy).

It is alleged you cannot transfer between laptops and desktops, but I cannot verify that - I have seen conflicting evidence to suggest that is "hit or miss".

I think of digital licences as "Restricted Retail" as opposed to "Full Retail".
