Transferring Windows 10 to a new Motherboard

    Hi

I've checked out previous answers on this subject, so I'm familiar with the procedure when I upgrade my m/b & processor.

    • If you upgraded from a retail copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1, the Windows 10 license carries the retail rights from which it was derived – can be transferred. But under Microsoft’s rules, you are only entitled to a one time transfer.
    • If you upgraded from an OEM Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1 license, these are licenses that come preinstalled on a new computer from a manufacturer, and then your Windows 10 license maintains the OEM rights – cannot be transferred.

So here's my potential wrinkle. I also built my last PC system in 2013, based on Windows 7, which I purchased at a retail store at the time in the UK. i.e. I did not buy the OS preinstalled on a store bought Desktop PC.

I upgraded that eventually with the free WINDOWS 10 offer.

Now... coming to check my original DVD box and sleeve, I see that my Windows 7 Home Premium is classed as an OEM System Builder Pack....

I'm suddenly guessing that I won't be transfer this after all?

    Any advice appreciated.

    DJ

    :)

  2. Reactivating Windows 10 with new motherboard

Plugging it into the new motherboard should be enough, but create a recovery drive in case you need to perform a startup repair:

The fact that you don't have a license key concerns me. If Windows 10 came preinstalled on your computer, you can't transfer it to a new computer or motherboard. You will need to purchase an entirely new license.

  3. transfer windows 10 to new pc?

It depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a retail store bought Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

If its the free upgrade from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 8 license, it is NOT transferable to a new computer or motherboard.
