recently did a clean install of W10. A whole new experience. Advice from a "knowledgable" was to leave all the AVs etc out and get the paid version of Trend Micro which would give me complete cover. I think I should have Ccleaner & Malwarebytes though. Any thoughts on this?

    :)

    Win 10 upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade my Wife's laptop from Win 7. I keep getting the error message to delete Trend Micro 2009? I'm running Trend Micro 2016 on her laptop. I tried deleting Trend Micro, but I still get the same error message? I checked the registry and
couldn't find any reference to Trend Micro 2009? Any ideas?

windows defender not turning when McAfee installed.

I had Windows 10 and Trend Micro Security and when an update for Trend came and restarted resulted in "Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap". Nothing would boot W 10 until I did a complete uninstall of Trend IS.

Trend Micro said there is a conflict with NVDA display SW. Now trying to use Defender after uninstalling Trend Micro. Not easy to do with W10 v1607.

Unless it is a business computer I see no reason not to use a free AV. Free AVs have a better detection than most paid.

I actually avoid paids AVs, because they include a lot of bloatware, which only slows down the computer.

I even custom install Avast Free in Minimal Protection to avoid any useless stuff.

  5. Hi:

    That's interesting.
    I've never heard of that.
Do you have a link to a resource with more information?

    @maurylen:

There is no "best" or "right" answer about which AV (free or paid or "any") for all computers and users.
There are probably at least 6.022140857(74)×1023 passionate posts about this here and elsewhere.
100 users will offer at least 101 opinions.
Except for MSE (WD under 8/8.1/10) most of the "free", 3rd-party AVs come with toolbars, nagging ads to upgrade, reduced functionality and/or reduced support. In most cases they are used as a marketing tool by the vendor. But they are fine for some folks.
I've never heard anywhere until now that the free AVs offer superior detection over the paid AVs (but perhaps we will learn more about that).

Bottom line: there are many comprehensive and authoritative resources about "best practices" for personal computing safety. Ultimately, the most important component is the one between the chair and keyboard.
But if you do opt for an AV (free or paid), you'll need to research it a bit and find the one that best suits your system, your computing habits, your budget, etc.

    Cheers,

    MM

  7. Hi:

    Thanks.
Yes, I am familiar with the "comparatives" type sites (with their associated upsides and downsides).

    I was really asking for specific information to substantiate the statement that "Free AVs have a better detection that most paid". {I mean no disrespect, but that seems like a rather broad generalization.}

    Thanks again.

    Cheers,
    MM

    Trend Micro only

The best defense against attack from any source is layered:
    • A properly configured firewall
    • An anti-malware (aka anti-virus) blocker that is loaded at startup
    • A second anti-malware blocker that is run periodically to catch what the first one might have missed
    • An anti-exploit blocker that is also loaded at startup
    • And, most importantly, an intelligent user who doesn't click on unknown links or download software that comes with PUPs from untrustworthy sources!

By that standard, Trend Micro only covers the first 2 items, but Windows Firewall / Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free Edition covers the first 3!

Adding Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free Edition covers the 4th item, but most of its shields expire after 14 days unless you upgrade to the paid Premium Edition.

And, CCleaner will give your machine lots of more disk space and eliminate some outdated registry entries, but it doesn't replace any of the above listed programs.

(I personally pay for the Premium versions of both Malwarebytes programs and for CCleaner, because that gives my machines real-time monitoring of both malware, bad Web sites, and exploits.)

Thanks to all for your comments. Seems I'm on the right track. I was using Malwarebytes and Ccleaner with W7 and had a great run from them. Trend Micro, paid version, is my new extra cover. I stay away from anything that looks suspicious so with that advice I'll "keep on keeping on" - cheers
