Windows 10: Trouble Upgrading 1803 to 1903 - Fails to restart

Hi All,

I've been trying to upgrade a machine to win 10 version 1903, but it keep failing.

It gets to I think 29%, then tries to restart, but I just get a black flashing screen. I get no error code.

The only way to get the machine running again is to hit escape during starting, then hit enter to continue startup. It then states "Undoing changes made to your computer".

I have removed all peripherals, ran the update troubleshooter, ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth & SFC /scannow, updated the BIOS.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with some start up problems I had late last year: The machine was in legacy mode & kept showing the Windows "preparing automatic repair" screen which was resolved by changing to UEFI mode follwoing some guidance on here (converted Legacy BIOS to UEFI using MBR2GPT, updated the firmware to UEFI only, used bootrec commands to write boot files).

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

For all steps please follow in kind with the number to make sure all steps are completed.

For device manager see the upper left corner menu area > click view > click show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device > post images into the thread

There is no need to perform windows upgrades until communicated in the thread.
