    Trouble with updating Windows 10 due to drive size/space restrictions


    I have not been able to update Windows 10 for quite some time. The update requires more space than is available on the drive. I purchased a 3TB external drive, but the update software doesn't allow me to use that space for the update. The update software tells me that I can use OneDrive to assist with the update, but the steps that are required per the Microsoft help pages don't exist in the OneDrive software, either on this laptop or online. I'm left with the thought that those steps can't be followed until Windows is updated.


    I'm left with the option of attempting to move all software save Windows 10 to the external drive, and I'm no expert at that. Even *that* might not leave enough space on the drive to update Windows.


    What options are left? Please let me know if you have any thoughts. Thanks.

    Windows 10 update fails due to space issue

    Not able to update Windows 10 due to space problem. The C drive is SSD 64 GB only. All data files are on D drive HSD 500 GB. The update requires minimum 8GB space. Please help with how to extend C drive space or suggest any other remedy to solve this issue."

    Windows is taking up too much hard drive space.

    Hi Trisha,

    Windows might have been accumulated large drive space due to installed apps, temporary files, or etc. For us to identify which item mostly accumulates your drive space, we suggest that you check it here:

    • Click on Start.
    • Type Storage, and then press Enter.
    • Under Local Storage, click on This
      PC (CTrouble with updating Windows 10 due to drive size/space restrictions :).
    • On this window, you will see which item mot accumulate your drive space.

    We also recommend that you follow the steps given on this article on how to
    free up drive space in Windows 10    . Click on every drop down to view the steps.

    The issue may occur due to corrupted system files or memory full. In order for us to assist you, please answer the questions below:
