Trying to create a system image as backup, Windows won't let me remove a secondary drive...

I assume this has something to do with the fact that I moved the WindowsApps folder from the system drive (CTrying to create a system image as backup, Windows won't let me remove a secondary drive... :) to my games drive.

Now, W10 also sees it as a "(System)" drive, even though the only MS-related files that are in it are games downloaded from the MS Store.

Is there any way to create a system image without that particular drive (which is 1TB in size), while avoiding actually deleting the games or moving back the WindowsApps folder to its default location, on C:?

  2. Help, cant create windows image

    Hello there, @fullinfusion!

It seems like some sort of an OS confusion has happened with your secondary WD Black and I'm sorry to hear about that. *Frown Trying to create a system image as backup, Windows won't let me remove a secondary drive... :(
Maybe re-formatting it would help indeed as the community already mentioned. I'd suggest to take a look at this step-by-step how to partition and format an HDD: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=PYCoid
Keep in mind that this will wipe clean the drive, so you should backup all important data from the drive somewhere else.
I noticed from the screenshots that your HDD appears as Disk 0, this means that it's plugged in the primary SATA port where the SSD (as an OS drive) should be. Actually it is possible that because of this Windows cannot create the image there. Swap the ports of the SSD and the HDD, this might help as well.

Keep me posted. Hope this helped! *Smile Trying to create a system image as backup, Windows won't let me remove a secondary drive... :)

  3. Can't Create a Backup or System Image in Window 10

I've been trying to create a backup and system image for some time now, but my computer keeps stalling at 97% completion (creating a system image) even when I leave it overnight.

Tool I'm using: Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore (Windows 7)

The system image should be less than 300GB and I'm using a 400 GB partition on an external hard drive to create the backup.

    Steps I've taken:

    - Run windows defender to remove a virus (this was the initial reason I couldn't create a system image)

    - Turn off windows defender

    - I've removed any previous "partial system image" or backup files from the partitioned hard drive each time I try.

The process stops at 97% each time as it's trying to create a system image.

How can I troubleshoot and get this process completed?

    Thank you.

Trying to create a system image as backup, Windows won't let me remove a secondary drive...

Cannot create a single system image on a flash drive

    Hi,

    I've tried both:

    • Create a system image: Windows looks for the drive and finds the flash drive but under it is an exclamation sign with "The drive is not a valid backup location." And "Next" is shaded, I cannot press it.
    • Windows backup: Setup backup:
      • The drive is in view, I select it then get the exclamation below "A system image cannot be saved on this location."
      • I can press "Next" (it will probably backup my folders...)
      • I press "more information" next to the exclamation: "Scheduled backup is not allowed on removable devices. You can try to save a single system image on this device by clicking "create system image" in the Windows 7 file recovery control panel." Of course,
I cannot create a single system image on it.
    Thank you.

Update: I just found the same option I'd used the first time I created recovery media in Windows 8.1 - it was sort of 'hidden' in the control panel. Is this the option you were referring to?
I am now creating a "Recovery Drive" on this same flash drive. I think when it's used, it restores the computer back to factory default (Windows 8). I would've preferred to be able to restore the system as is now. Anyway, thank you for this support.
