Windows 10: Trying to deactivate Windows 10 20H2, but it tells me that it is still activated...

I am trying to deactivate the copy of Windows 10 20H2 on a computer.


In doing so, I perform the following steps :

1. Make sure I have no network connection.
2. Open a command prompt as administrator.
3. Type "slmgr /upk" to remove the product key.
4. Type "slmgr /cpky" to clear the product key from the registry.
5. Reboot the PC to make sure the key is cleared out.
6. Check the activation status after reboot.

When I check the activation status, the screen tells me that Windows is still activated. I go back into the command prompt and I can verify that the key is gone. In the past, prior to 20H2, the steps above were sufficient and information about the activation status was on the System screen. However, with 20H2, the place to check activation status was changed and I'm wondering if there was underlying code that was changed as well.


Do I need to do more to deactivate Windows now?

I won't buy a key, stupid.

I'll revert back to windows 7 then.

When I still was on windows 7, about a year ago I added 4GB extra ram which is a total of 8GB now,
is that causing the problem?

If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free and ended up in a non-activated state, try following these steps:

• Go to Start

• Select Go to Store, and check to see if a valid license is available for your device. If a license isn't available, you'll need to buy Windows from the Store.
