    Trying to delete a folder on an external hard drive. I get message: You'll need to provide...


    I am trying to delete a folder from an external hard drive. The folder is screwing up my back up service. When I try to delete the folder I get the message: You'll need to provide administrator permission to delete the folder. I have tried everything I know and I am showing I am the administrator. How can I get rid of this folder short of copying the good folders to another drive and reformatting the external drive.

    Hi John,

    We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

    • Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
    • Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.
    The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

    How to delete folder/files when "Item Not Found" + folder located in external hard-drive

    Hi Juan,





    There are possible factors for the folders to be missing or cannot be found. To isolate the issue, I have some
    questions for you:




    • Were there any error messages when you connect your external hard drive to your PC?

    • Have you tried searching for the folders while enabling the "show hidden files" in your external hard drive?

    • Were there any changes made before the issue occurred?

    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

    Thanks for the suggestion but it says "delete folder failed for E:\....." for each folder I try.
