  1. Trying to extend new boot partition raises "covert to dynamic disk" warning.

I recently got an SSD and am wanting to copy over my current C drive contents to it, as to not have to reinstall anything. Using Macrium Reflect I was able to clone the drive onto the SSD, however it also copied the partitions - leaving me with 1.6TB of unallocated space. When trying to extend the partition, I get the warning "The operation selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s)". As I'm planning on using this as the boot partition as well, I don't want this to happen. Is there any way for me to extend the partition without converting to Dynamic nor formatting? This is what my current Disk Management looks like. The 836MB partition appears to not be able to be deleted, as right clicking only shows Help.

  2. Extending partition in Windows 10 raises "The operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s)"

I installed Ubuntu 16.04 alongside Windows 10, however I had to remove it due to some bugs (related to Ubuntu, not Windows). I removed the Ubuntu partitions (279.25 GB) from Disk Management, and now I am left with the situation
shown in the attached screenshot. I tried to extend the D volume by including the unallocated 279.25 GB. However when I try to extend it I get the warning message "The Operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s). If you
convert the disk to dynamic, you will not be able to start installed operating systems from any volume on the disk(s)...." etc.

Now, I do not want to convert the disk to dynamic, as I will probably install another Ubuntu distribution. How can I extend the drive D? Also, I don't know whether the 513 MB volume on Disk 1 (EFI System Partition) was created by
Ubuntu or not? If yes, should I delete it?

  3. How to Extend the Windows partition of a Dynamic UEFI/GPT drive?

There is Trying to extend new boot partition raises "covert to dynamic disk" warning. :)

After working until midnight last night and again until 2pm today - trying all sorts - I fixed it in 2 minutes.

    Solution

    • Download Paragon Partition manager Free
    • Click on the SSD that contains the Windows partition
    • Convert Dynamic Disk to Basic
After that most of the other free tools allowed the partition to be extended into the unallocated section despite having the Restore partition in the middle.

  4. Trying to extend new boot partition raises "covert to dynamic disk" warning.

How to Extend the Windows partition of a Dynamic UEFI/GPT drive?

I initially started with Partition manager but I cant get it to do anything useful in the free version - I have used it in the past to extend partitions but now it just demands a paid version. I suspect its because it is a Dynamic disk - perhaps with a
Basic disk it would be ok. I'm not sure how I ended up with a dynamic disk - I have just upgraded to a new MB/CPU and RAM using Macrium to transfer Windows/Boot - it's now on a larger M2 drive which is why I want to extend.

I will have a look at the Macrium process you outline above - I'm just keen not to do anything that voids my Windows activation - I have a retail copy but am probably on the last hardware change I can do.
