  1. Trying to figure out how to enable smooth scrolling in local folders.

I mean, when I'm viewing local pictures in a folder I can't figure out how to scroll through the images smoothly. If I use the mouse wheel, one wheel click lurches up or down about 2/3 of a screen, which is very disorienting. If I use the up arrow or down arrow on the scroll bar, it lurches up or down 1/3 of a screen. At no point is any of this smooth, unlike in previous versions of windows. To be clear, I don't mind the amount of screen that moves per click, I just want the transition to be smooth, not abrupt.

My system is an AMD Ryzen 1600, Nvidia 1060, 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVME. It's definitely not a hardware issue.

I've had this issue since I first got Windows 10 over 3 years ago and I'm just so tired of it. I've looked for solutions several times and the only thing I ever find any info about is how to enable smooth scrolling in control panel, which has no effect on this. Also, reducing the number of lines the scroll wheel moves has no effect. And lastly, none of the performance settings I've messed with have an effect on this.

  2. What is smooth scrolling?

    Hi Kenneth,

Smooth scrolling is a feature available in Internet Explorer that allows you to scroll through a web pages smoothly, as the name of the feature suggests. If this is turned off, when scrolling through a web page, you'll notice that the scroll
bar slides down as if it's slightly delayed, but if this is turned on, the scroll bar slides down smoothly, without delay.

This is useful when scanning through long web pages or articles.

To turn on/off smooth scrolling, see the following steps:

    • Open Internet Explorer, click the gear icon, and then click
      Internet
      Options.
    • Click on the Advanced tab.
    • Locate Use smooth scrolling, and tick the check box if you want it turned on/off.

Let us know if you have further questions.

  3. How to enable smooth scrolling like Firefox has in Edge

    Hello,

If you want to enable smooth scrolling in Edge, kindly check out these methods and see which helps best:

Method 1: Right click on the Windows start button to start in the context Menu

    • Type System in search box
    • Go to Advanced System Settings
    • Click Advanced Performance the go to Settings
    • Uncheck "smooth-scroll list boxes" then click Apply and
      OK

    Method 2:

    • Open Control Panel and look for Mouse.
    • Look for the Wheels tab.
    • Increase or decrease the Vertical and Horizontal Scrolling according to your preference.
    • Click Apply to test it and click OK to finalize your changes.

Here you can change the figure from 3, to 2 or even 1 it depends on you. This will make any page or document to scroll 1 line at a time. If you change this setting, it would be changed system-wide, ie. for your documents as well as browsers.

Get back to us if the steps won't work.

  4. Trying to figure out how to enable smooth scrolling in local folders.

No smooth scrolling on Windows 10

Here's a couple settings I found, which you can tweak in Windows 10 to create smoother scrolling throughout the entire OS:

    1. Method #1: Right click on the Windows start button to start in the context menu and follow these steps: System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Uncheck "smooth-scroll list boxes" > Click "Apply" > "OK" > "OK."
    2. Method #2: Open Control Panel > Mouse > Wheels tab. Here you can change the figure from 3, to 2 or even 1 if you wish. This will make any page or document to scroll 1 line at a time. If you change this setting, it would be changed system-wide, ie. for your documents as well as browsers.
    3. To accomplish browser-only smooth scrolling, try the following:
      • Chrome: Try the SmoothScroll extension - SmoothScroll
      • Firefox: Try the SmoothWheel extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/smoothwheel/?src=search
      • Opera: The same developer for Chrome's SmoothScroll extension made a SmoothScroll extension for Opera, but I can't post more than 2 links because I don't have 10 reputation yet.
      • Internet Explorer: Open Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > Select the check box next to "Use Smooth scrolling" > Click "Apply."

    I hope this is helpful.
