Computer 1: Nuvo running Windows 10 Pro.
Computer 2: Nuc running Windows 10 Pro.

Computer 1 has an external HDD connected to it that holds all my media (entertainment + family). Currently, this drive is 'shared' with "everyone", and I did this so I could connect to it from my PC (PC #3) but also so that files downloaded on Computer 2 could move the files onto the external HDD over the network.

Computer 2 runs Radarr, and downloads the files simply to the local storage drive (dTrying to figure out proper settings/permissions in protecting a network drive from... :). Radarr is then setup to move completed downloads to what it sees as the network drive on computer 1. The entire purpose of the NUC is to pull the media off the internet.

Computer 1 runs a Plex Media server, and Plex is setup to read from the connected external HDD all the media.

Both Computer 1 and Computer 2 are running on the only accounts created, and are both admins.

Last summer, I had a ransomware attack that jumped to the network drive, so I am frightful of this happening again. So ideally, the only computer that NEEDS access would be the NUC, so that files downloaded can be transmitted to the NUVO.

Computer 1, Computer 2, and my computer (computer 3) all run Windows 10 Pro. So there is that consistent variable.

What steps can I follow in order to limit the amount of risk the external HDD is exposed to? I've gotten suggestions in another sub, on the topic of ransomeware, etc.. about only allowing read only permissions, etc.. but there has to be write permissions at some point in order for the files to even get onto the external drive.

Do I need to setup new user accounts on Computers 1 and 2 to deal with this appropriately? Any specific steps you would recommend I'd appreciate.

    Thanks

  2. Permission issue, shared drive Windows 10.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We can understand your concern. However, we would need some more information regarding the issue.

    1. May I know the exact error message?
    2. Have you shared all hard drives or any particular folder within the particular hard drive?

Since you have mentioned that you are getting error related to permission issue, please refer to the troubleshooting steps provided by “Azee N” dated June 2nd 2010 on
Providing permission to drive and try
    providing permission to the drive.

If the issue still persists, we would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below to re-map the drive.

    1. Disconnect the drive by right click on the drive and select disconnect (if the drive is mapped).
    2. Then re-map the drive by referring to Map a network drive
and check if it resolves the issue.

    Regards,

Choosing NTFS permissions for shared drives on a local private network

I FINALLY figured out the solution to getting access to the shared drives on my desktop PC. I had to set the NTFS permissions to include "Everyone".

But what if I don't wan't to allow everyone on the network access to these files, and only the user account on my laptop instead?

When searching through the principal groups in the NTFS permissions for drives located on the desktop, my laptop user account isn't listed as a choice. Choosing "Authenticated Users" or "Administrators" does not allow for network access. The only way I've managed to give my laptop access to the drives on my desktop through the local private network, has been to set the NTFS permissions for those drives to include "Everyone". Is there a better way?

    Thanks.
