    Trying to hide admin users, while keeping them viable


    Setting up a...kiosk type computer for a client's lobby. It has been removed from the domain and all that fun stuff for security reasons. However, I want to remove the admin logons from the Login screen.

    I DID find a few articles that have you make a registry change to hide the users from the login screen. However, it does a lot than just that. Not only is there no "Other users" tab so I can login to the admin account, it also seems to disable any UAC login prompts so I can't make changes if need be.

    I can disable the interactive logon don't display last login, which will now display other user, but I want the primary usage account to show up immediately. So kind of at a loss at the moment.

    TLDR: Need a single user to show up on logon screen, but need to be able to sign into another account when needed.

    admin rights keep disappearing!?!!

    Hi guys,

    I am actually having a problem at work that our IT department hasn't been able to figure out. I am supposed to be a member of the admin group. We are on a domain. The problem is that everytime I reboot the computer I loose my admin rights(no longer in the administrator group) and just become a normal user again. I have tried googling this and didn't get to many results.
    I believe IT is just giving me local admin rights, not admin rights for the whole domain.

    Any suggestions?

    EDIT: It is on Windows XP Pro.

    net user administrator /active:no keeps saying access denied.

    Hi Rebekah,

    It's possible that you're not using an elevated command prompt, causing the Access Denied error. We suggest following these steps to properly disable the built-in administrator account:

    • Right-click the Start button.
    • Choose Command Prompt (Admin).
    • Copy and paste net user Administrator /active:no and press
      Enter      . If the command isn't successful, please post a screenshot so that we can study it further.

    Let us know if you're able to hide the administrator account after following these steps.
