Windows 10: Trying to update Old Acer Desktop to 1903 from 1809 fails every time.

I have tried safe mode, clean boot and deleting the windows update folder and letting it download again and it continues to fail. I have tried manually dozens of times and I have walked in on it trying to update on its own and failing. "Undoing changes to your pc" after the restarts.



The Acer is incredibly old 2011 it hasnt had any new driver releases for ages. Awhile ago the original HDD it came with was on the verge of failing so i replaced it with a samsung evo 860.



The pc isnt mine it's my dad's and he couldnt care less as long as it turns on and continues to function for printing purposes. The installation has Google chrome and the software required to print with an Hp printer. Nothing else has been installed on it except what comes with 10 Pro by default.

Upgraded to 1903 but it still 1809

At this point I am just exploring this topic and listening to all opinions.

Upgrading from 1809 to 1903 on my desktop was painless and error free, but it was forced upon me by MS. They ignored my update delay settings, and suddenly and unexpectedly the update/upgrade began. I resigned to it because I have four 1809 Macrium mirrors. If 1903 failed, I could easily restore.

Currently, I still have 1809 on the laptop. Are you suggesting to upgrade from 1809 to 1909? Now, 1909 is offered on the settings\updates page. I made two attempts to upgrade from 1809 to 1903. The first attempt was from the update link in the settings\updates and the second attempt was from Microsoft's update site - both failed. Based on this recent experience, the 1909 update will also fail because of Acer.

 

1903 fails 0x8000ffff

Successfully installed 1903 on 3 comp0uters. Cannot install 1903x64 over 1809 on an Acer Aspire 5750.

Fails with error 0x8000ffff.

Things I have tried:

Using Windows Update notification

Using Windows Installation media

Ran Windows update troubleshooter

Deleted Softwaredistribution folder contents

Clean boot

Any suggestions?

Failed Forced v.1903 Update...

The automatic forced update to v.1903 on my system failed during the night a couple of days ago. The v.1903 update took 11.5 hours to download/install and another hour to do the update. Then another hour to download and install two additional updates. No errors listed in update history, but the desktop, Firefox, and Windows Live Mail were completely trashed ( there were other apps possibly affected). All mail folders and all bookmarks were lost as well as the setups for each app. Restoring v.1809 from the windows.old folder. The restore to V.1809 went well and restored Firefox, Windows Live Mail, and the desktop to what they were before the v.1903 update. Update and Security panel now shows that there were two installs of v.1903 with the first failing with error code 0x802400d and the second automatically restarting and completing successfully. That hadn't been displayed before for some reason. The Update History panel shows three feature updates: the second 1903, the first failed 1903 and the old 1809 with the correct date (May 15, 2019). The About System panel shows v.1809 bld 17163.678 being installed. WU has done two autoupdate checks since the v.1903 debacle and states the system is up to date. Of course, the "Download and Install" link is now gone from the WU panel.

My questions concern WU doing an unrequested 1903 update someday, or will it think 1903 is installed and I will eventually have to download an ISO to update to v.1903? Or worse, will WU download and try to install CUs for 1903 on an 1809 system?
