  1. Turn off sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public...

After the recent update of Windows 10 May 2004 I could not access the Public folders that were shared, prior to update things where fine.

The only work around is set Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders

in Network Sharing under all networks, but I don't want my roomates to see the public folders, only me.

I can access all the other shared folders on my Laptop and PC, I checked all shared settings and they are correct. Something the update changed in the network and sharing center it says if the option is turned off, "people logged on to this computer can still access these folders" but that is not true,

I tried removing credentials and re-adding them, didn't work.

I tried all the options from this https://www.easeus.com/pc-transfer/...easeus&lctid=546559&lcid=1591634003_3_6899376

and this is where I found the answer https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/50179-turn-off-public-folder-sharing-windows-10-a.html

how can I go back to being logged on to the laptop or pc and still seeing the public shared folders, under public shared settings it is shared. so I should also see them along with the other folders that I can see and read and write ?

    :)

  2. Can files be accessed on a network if Public folder sharing is turned off?

Yes, by disabling Password Protected Sharing, you are effectively adding guest access to your shares.

    per MS (Sharing and Discovery)

So Password Protected Sharing helps you configure share permissions, and does not automatically allow guest/anonymous access.

Public Folder Sharing is a specific feature in Windows, that automatically shares the Public profile (usually at c:\users\public) for all computers and users that can access the PC.

    From the same document:

Personally, I want people to use passwords on my workgroup so, I always

    • disable homegroups
    • enable password protected sharing
    • disable public sharing
    • use advanced sharing to create each of my shares.

I set my share permissions to Everyone => Full Control, and then lock down the filesystem permissions to allow only the specific users that should see the content. This is recommended by MS, because if you have content on another disk shared, and rebuild the system, your filesystem permissions on the shared items will remain exactly as they were. if you put all your access control logic in the share permissions however, those get lost when the OS instance is replaced with the new build.

  3. Mapping hard drive problems

Ping is blocked by the Windows firewall usually, 7 this may have been taken out of the firewall by default not sure. But basically check that sharing is enabled as suggested. On my win7 laptop here i have for sharing settings:

    Turn on network discovery
Turn on file and print sharing
Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders

Sharing permissions can still say read or read/write access to folders. so dont worry so much on security there.

  4. Turn off sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public...

Sharing a folder still asking to enter password even after disabling turn off password protecting sharing in Windows 10

Old title: Sharing is not working

    Dear Microsoft

I have a basic question about the networking. I have two computer and i want to share the folder named "games" using the lan. I connect both computer (computer_1 and computer_2) in computer 1 i
shared this folder for everyone to read and write. But the problem is that in the computer_1
turn off the password protecting but it still requiring the password to access the folder "games". And also there is Microsoft password is not working.

Means turn off password protecting sharing is not work.

I want to access this folder in computer_2 without requiring any password for computer_1.

I used the following process also but it still requiring to enter in the computer_1.

    • private (current profile)
    • Turn on network discovery
    • Turn on file and printing sharing
    • Guest of Public
    • Turn on network discovery
    • Turn on file and printing sharing
    • All Network
    • Turn on sharing so anyone with the network access can read and write file in the public folder
    • Turn off password protecting
