Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

Shawn I think LM2007 is saying his hybrid Seagate has something like RAPID Mode that's on Samsung's.

Ah, I see. Thank you Cliff.

I'm afraid that I don't know how Fast Startup will affect the drive though.

    Now my 2 cents...

I have found turning off all extras on hardware and letting windows handle everything(I used to swear by RAPID Mode, but now not with windows 10 since it doesn't work on 10 anyhow). With Windows 7 and earlier PCs might have need it. But I found turning of extras increase boot time by a few seconds. No SSD or any other disk can control and speed up the BIOS to CMOS boot portion(which needs time to find and "turn on" everything including other disk hardware), and everything else depends on what programs that run at boot, and I find Windows 10 handles this better than (in my case Samsung Rapid Mode did(also a caching program)). Try turning it off if it's possible on yours and run Fast Startup a week or two. On my SSD, boot time after BIOS is almost instantaneous.

  5. I'm wondering if this would make a real difference on systems with HDDs, but not much of a difference with newer systems with SSDs as the primary boot drive.

It does indeed make a noticeable difference for both HDD (more so) and SSD by not having to go through the normal full boot routine.

If you have an SSD, in any case I have found the WinX shutdown faster than the the one for fast-startup(from start menu when turned on).
I occasionally use WinX for a full shutdown, so that any PendingFileRenameOperation's can get done, and I'm not quite sure yet if there is much of a difference in boot times.

Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

Shawn on my system, after BIOS, my desktop just pops up with fast startup both on & off. But it could just be because the WinX shutdown or a restart is seldom done.

Thanks for that-used Option 2 to reinstall Fast Startup which was much easier and quicker than I ever expected,me being a bit of a novice. Great to have a site like this too.

  11. I don't know if anyone noticed this, but with Fast Start enabled, my battery life would drain quite a bit. My laptop sat powered off for about 24 hours and went from a full charge to 67%.

  12. I read somewhere that with faststart the computer does not shut off completely ,instead goes in some kind of hibernation.

Yep, if you're running only on battery, then Fast Startup may not be the best option for battery life since the PC doesn't do a full shutdown. *Smile

Fast startup (aka: hybrid boot or hybrid shutdown) is turned on by default in Windows and is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after shutdown. Windows does this by saving system info to a file (hiberfil.sys) upon shutdown so when you start your PC again, Windows uses that system info to resume your PC instead of restarting it.

I lost my Fast Start somehow but,as you will see above,I have just got it back thanks to the option 2 above. Both before I lost it and after I lost it my HP laptop would not power down as it used to when running Win 8.1. I don't suppose it will be any different on that score now I've got it back. If you search on this site under 'Power Down' there is one suggestion to try which is getting some good reports. It involves going to the site 'How to Resolve Post-Windows 10 Upgrade Issues on HP Laptops ... - HP Support Forum - 5209825' but I'm a learner so haven't tried it myself yet.

Hey Brink *Smile Something I thought you might want to add to this very useful tutorial.
If you only use the hiberboot function and not the actual hibernation function, you might as well run Code: powercfg /hibernate /type reduced[/quote] , as it can reduce the size of hiberfil.sys by a sizable chunk.

    Just my two cents.
    Cheers.
